  • 1.  DS console shows administrator as logged in user for most connections, but actual user is not administrator

    Posted Mar 28, 2009 11:13 AM
    Hello,
when I highlight computer icon or open properties of Thin 5720 in most cases it shows Administrator as logged in user.
All our boxes setup to autologn with different user name by department.
Very few icons shows appropriate user name.
Administrator logged in appears in 90%. Sure I checked by RDP that right user is
    logged in.
I stopped Altiris service restarted the DEP SOL server. The same story.

How to fix this cosmetic bug?

    Thx.
    Michael.

This seems to happen a lot with DAgent.  If you aren't running Vista or 2008, I would suggest that you use AClient instead.  Restarting the DAgent or AClient will cause it to report in with the current logged in username.

    AClient - 6.9.366  (32-bit)
Console shows 6.9(Version 365) I know that sp was installed. Don't know why it not reflects this.

I use DS for  HP Thin Clients only so licenses not needed.

I believe the problem may be the autologon. I have thin clients here that log in automatically and they never show a logged in user because they start logging in before AClient is fully up so it never detects the logon. Not sure why yours show as administrator though.

You'll want to ensure that the AClient and the DS version are the same.  If I am not mistaken, if you are running AClient - 6.9.366, your DS should be at 6.9 SP1, MP1.

I am assuming that you followed these instructions:
    http://www.altiris.com/Products/DeploymentSolution/hpthinclients.aspx

Also, after verifying the version of your DS server, can you try restarting the AClient on one of the problem computers?  Does the console update itself after you do this?

You can restart the AClient from a command line by doing this:
    "c:\program files\altiris\aclient\aclient -restart"

As I mentioned in initial post there are some that shows right user name.
    Others - Administrator.

About version. I did installation with Altiris guy and we applied sp for DS.
I will probably call them again. I didn't see this problem from the very beginning.

From your post I feel that something could be screwed up in agent.
Because initially DAgent was pushed automatically to all xpe boxes and they about all lost connection to console (previous AClient was screwed up - AClient folder had just one file)

So I pushed AClient to all. All boxes appeared but logged in user became Administrator instead of real one.

If DAgent was pushed automatically and then you pushed AClient, DAgent may still be on the client.  If that is the case that could cause a problem as well.

If you think it's related to the autologon logging on before the AClient is fully running, I would suggest making the netlogon service dependent on the AClient service.  This would make the logon process wait until the AClient is running.

I found the fix. Absolutely simple.
Autolog is not a problem at all. And as I mentioned it showed right user name for few clients.
So I kind of didn't take autologon as a cause of the problem.
What I did do. I folowed advice of behawver about reseting client by connecting remotely when user was logged in. AClient reloaded but the user name in DS console didn't change from Administrator.
Next I decided to close the session. Since it on autologon, new session automatically opened with Autologon name. Pufff... The appropriate user name displayed in DS console.

Then I tried to run AClient reset command on all boxes (run the command from the console).
It didn't help because I knew it requered at least relogin.

I have 80 Thins on first subnet. I created groups by department using inventory. Because cannot identify departments by autologon user name. And then instead of running AClient reset I found the time when there was no activity and restarted the boxes.

The answer is: after pushing new client Thin should be restarted (or relogin after reseting AClient) in order to show appropriate user name.

    Thanks to all.
    Michael.
