DS7.1 - Computer Images To Another Drive?

Created: 16 Oct 2012 | 5 comments

We are running into an issue with our application drive running low on space because of all our disk images. Is it possible to configure DS 7.1 to save the images to another location like you can with Software Delivery? If not, how big are you making your drives?

I encourage people to use hardware independent imaging so only a few images are needed.

You could mount another drive as a folder of your data drive.

Many people use virtual machines and Windows 2008 R2 so just allocate more space and extend the secondary drive in Windows Disk manager.

That what we do here but with base images to roll back to and all the different version of Server 2008 it grows very quickly. Over 100GB of storage is what we see right now. If we grew the NS then we would also have to grow all the site servers. It would be nice if you had the same control to what synched where like you do with software packages.

I think that comes with 7.5. You should be able to put backup images in a seperate place.

The only "supported" method of moving the files is to move the agent to a new drive in the current release.  There are a few more options coming in 7.5, but not specifically and perfectly what you're asking for.  We do have requests on the table to make that easier, but couldn't get those into 7.5.

Many people are adding a drive and then mapping that drive to the Images folder, which can work, but obviously we can't support it.  Some customers have tried to move the entire deployment share to a SAN or other off-box storage.  I'll just say now, that doesn't work well.  I THINK the images can go off-box, but performance in imaging is slow.

Also note that with HTTP imaging, you can store them pretty much anywhere that IIS can find/connect to.
