Duplicate to Tape Only Once Per Month?

Created: 24 Jul 2013 | 12 comments

I'm trying to set some duplicate job templates up to duplicate backups to tape on the 1st of every month. Here's what I have set up right now:

Selection Lists

  • Databases - various SQL databases (2000/2005/2008)
  • Email - the mailbox database on our Exchange 2010 server
  • Files - various files on a number of Windows servers

Policies

  • Databases - Full B2D every day
  • Email - Incremental B2D Mon-Thu, Full B2D Fri
  • Files - Differential B2D Mon-Thu, Full B2D Fri

Ideally, I'd like to run a tape backup on the 1st of every month with a duplicate of a Full backup... I'm not sure of the best way to do this though... Maybe schedule for Fulls to be run on the 1st regardless of what day of the week it is?  Can someone make a suggestion?

You would need to make sure your full duplicate to tape occured after the Full on Friday for your Email and File jobs.

Right, but if the 1st of the month is a Monday, I don't want to wait 5 days to do the duplicate to tape.

and yes if you wanted to run the tape job on the first always you could just run the full on that day.

It would be better if you could backup to tape weekly.

Well I guess there's no reason I couldn't do that, but the point of the exercise is to have a year's worth of tapes sitting on a shelf for I guess archival purposes...

I have the B2D volume set for 4 week retention, and then I do a tape every month, and then overwrite those on a yearly basis.  I keep the last tape of the year (from Jan 1) forever... Is this not a sound strategy?

SGaucher,

thank you for describing your scenario fully.  Your plan is sound, the obvious is to just adjust the month end backups either by the day the month ends or by the last full backup job. My backup strategy used to be based on the need to only run fulls on weekend so therefore the Monthly job had to be staggered accordingly.

Hi Imosla,

How can I set these duplicate jobs up to only run after the Full B2D they're copying from are complete?  I can try to guess at when they're done and schedule accordingly, but there must be a better way to accomplish this...

I've also tried setting a template rule stating "After Full B2D completes, start Tape Duplicate." but it won't let me do that, saying "Only rules to duplicate backup sets can be used with the Duplicate Backup Sets job type."

In the policy do you have the template selection as a 'Duplicate Backup Sets Template' not 'Backup Template'

That's odd, .....  Have you seen these links? About template rules   About duplicate backup set templates  and also this excellent article TechTip: Automating Backup Exec Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape Operations    especially the paragraph: Delayed tape copying outside the backup window

Okay, I might just schedule them manually.  Can/should I schedule tape duplicates for all 3 policies for the same time, or should I try to stagger them?  Will Backup Exec run them sequentially or simultaneously?

It is usually better to stagger the jobs to ease system demands.

Running the job manually can certainly be done, but the option should be available to run your scenario via the policy and template.

If you have the full job set up with a policy you can add a Duplicate Backup Sets Template.  In the template edit the Schedule selecting 'Submit job on hold'.

then add a new rule for After Full Backup completed, start Scheduled Backup Duplicate  180px_Duplicate use.JPG
