Duplicating backups from One media server to another.

Created: 08 Apr 2013 | 1 comment

How do I get backup exec to duplicate my backup files from one media server to another?

I have two servers running backup exec.

Server-1

Windows 2008R2
Backup exec 2012
Central Managment Option
4TB of backup to disk space
No tape Library

Server-2

Windows 2008R2
Backup exec 2012
Managed backup server (by server-1)
250GB of backup to disk space
Large LTO-4 Tape Libarary with 5 drives and 100+ slots.

I want to be able to run a backup on Server-1 using backup 2 disk, then when the backup job is complete have it duplicated to the tape library on Server-2.  I've done something similar with older versions of backup exec.

Server-1 and Server 2 are located in geographically separate locations.  We have a dedicated private highspeed link between the two sites.

Whenever I try to create a job to do this I get an error message.

"A duplicate backup sets template must use a destination device that can be access by the same bqackup exec server as the device specified for the original backup set."

Why can't I server-1 to  duplicate to a tape library on a server-2, a media server it manages?

Any help with this is appreciated.

You definitely need to define which is the private cloud server in your configuration and may also need to use Deduplication instead of standard disk storage (on both servers) to achieve what you are trying to achieve (known as Optimized Duplication) - There is some functionality that the private cloud setting does affect against standrad disk storage, however I am not sure it it capable of your scenario without a Deduplication configuration.
