1 INTRODUCTION

The integration of DVS4SBC with Altiris® SVS™ (Software Virtualization Solution™) optimizes your Return on Investment in a Terminal Server environment, Citrix or other Server Based Computing environment. By installing SVS™ and DVS4SBC you can install all your application software packages by importing a layer and activating it.

The same goes for DVS locally on client machines. Software that is deactivated can not disturb your operating software or other software packages locally installed or virtualized on the same machine.

Managing software becomes as easy as it should be.

By building the DVS or DVS4SBC profile management rules inside each package, user settings will no longer be part of the software, but be part of the user profile. Resetting an application will no longer cause users to loose data and settings.

2 MANAGEMENT SUMMARY

DVS4SBC and DVS are intended to bring software management back to it’s roots. Centralized management in large environments, independent from user settings, locally installed software and operating systems.
In every software layer there is a rule that user settings will be exported when the user logs off, or when the layer is reset.

Users will no longer loose data and settings. When using DVS4SBC on the server, or the fat client product DVS on the local client, the user will experience a “pass through” technique.
All settings made to either side will be completely transferred to the other client type.
When a user is changing colour schemes and background settings, the settings will be available in the other environment as well.
Software is added by user rights, and no longer by what is installed. A complete AD integration is available.

3 ALTIRIS® SVS™ INTEGRATION
DVS and DVS4SBC use the Altiris® SVS™ console to easily manage packages on clients and servers. DVS Enterprise Administrator gives you centralized control on all machines in AD. 3.2 About SVS
SVS™ makes it possible to run applications in ‘layers’. Applications running in these layers will ‘see‘ their own files and registry keys in their own layer. Communication with other layers and/or locally installed software is transparent, as if software is installed locally.

3.3 Userprofiles
DVS and DVS4SBC can be used with all profiles. To get maximum results Mandatory profiles or Hybrid profiles should be used. With a Mandatory profile the user always gets the default settings and the user settings are stored in the user directory. A hybrid profile gives you the ability to use one profile in a Fat client and also in a Citrix environment. This prevents users from managing settings in both environments.
3.4 Package software in a layer
SVS™ provides you with an easy tool to package software inside a layer. Various techniques are supported to provide you with the best way to package software and to update existing layers.
By using Wise Packaging studio 7, you will be in control by giving additional functionality inside a layer to run tasks on every mouse click. Various tasks that are supported can be done by:
• Pre activate;
• Post activate;
• Pre import;
• Post import;
• Pre export;
• Post export;
• Pre reset;
• Post reset;
• Pre export;
• Post export.

For example: When you need to reset software, you can define a pre reset rule that exports all user settings at once, and with the post reset rule these settings can be imported again.

The profile management settings will give you the ability to:
• Include registry keys
• Exclude registry keys
• Include files
• Exclude files.

Just by altering a text file you will be able to manage settings and size of the profile. Settings can be deployed quickly through your network on all your servers and clients.
By using the same settings on all machines, the user is completely independent from his computer. He or she can use every computer that is provided with DVS or DVS4SBC.
