e00084ec - Error reading/writing data from/to the media.
Hello All,
I have a problem with my new Sony LIB81 tape library.
First a summary of the situation.
I'm using a windows 2003 server with all the last critical update's
I'm using een Sony LIB81 tape library with an SDX-700V tape drive
I'm using version 10.1 rev. 5629 with service pack 1.
I also installed the newest tape driverpack from veritas.
The library is connected on a scsi controller from adaptec 29160LP
I tested the drive and library succesfull with the sony tapetool, and no problems at all.
The error i get during the backup is the following:

Hello,
You may refer to the following technote for further troubleshooting this issue
(titre) "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" is reported in the Backup Exec job log during a failed backup/verify operation
http://support.veritas.com/docs/192216
Note:- if we do not receive your reply within two business days, this post would be assumed answered and archived.
Thanks.
i followed that document
see my answers between the "tips"
1. Contaminated read/write heads of the tape device:
Check with the hardware manufacturer for proper cleaning techniques.
I cleaned the drive 5 times, no results
2. Bad media:
Replace the media. Try a new tape that is certified by the hardware manufacturer.
I tried 8 brand new tape's, no results
3. Tape driver:
Load the appropriate Backup Exec tape driver. The latest Backup Exec tape drivers can be downloaded from the VERITAS Technical Support Web site at http://support.veritas.com/rd/bews-drivers.htm .
i installed the latest drivers from the website, no results
4. SCSI controller wide negotiation enabled:
Use the manufacturer's SCSI setup program to disable wide negotiation on the SCSI controller card.
5. SCSI controller wide negotiation:
If the device is a wide (68 pin) SCSI device, then wide negotiation may and should be used. If the device is a narrow (50 pin) SCSI device, disable wide negotiation.
6. SCSI controller transfer rate is too fast:
Use the manufacturer's SCSI setup program to lower the SCSI transfer rate. Check with the controller and backup device manufacturer for the proper configuration for SCSI transfer rate.
7. SCSI controller synchronous negotiation enabled:
Use the manufacturer's SCSI setup program to disable synchronous negotiation on the SCSI controller card. Check with the controller and backup device manufacturer for the proper configuration for SCSI synchronous negotiation.
I could not find the setup program for my SCSI card.
Normaly you can enter a command (like ctrl-a or something) to enter de SCSI setup during system boot, but i can't, i don't see anything like that, so i can't change any SCSI setting
8. Incorrect termination or bad cables:
Verify that the SCSI cable is good and is configured to provide proper SCSI termination. Do not mix passive and active termination.
Termination is OK. On the terminator, en green LED is ON, that means that everything is OK.
9. Confirm that the tape drive is functioning properly:
Check with the tape drive manufacturer for diagnostic software to test the condition of the tape drive hardware.
I downloaded and installed the program "sony TapeTool". I tested different tapes, and al where succesfull. I tested 100's of GB's, and no problem at all.
10. General SCSI problems:
Isolate the tape drive on its own controller card.
The Library is the only device connected to the SCSI card.
Is there someone from symantec or veritas who can help me with this problem.
I tried everything yet, and on the moment i'm currently 1 week without backup !
my device driver = from symantec
the date = 3/27/2006
version = 5.1.17.0
HI,
Check the system event logs
Search for Event IDs 7. 9,11, or 15.
The event ids indicate a hardware problem.
Have you tried using new tapes?
Run an "Erase" on one of the tapes and check whether you get the same error while running backup..

yes, i have event ids 7 in my eventvwr
but if it is an hardware problem WHY i can backup 200GB with the sony tapetool ?
as told before i used 8 new tapes
i also tried to do erase, but the problem still exist.
now i completely removed BE, and did a brand new re-installation and the problem still excist.
I also changed the SCSI Terminator for sure, but still the same problem.
Which device drivers do you use?

Have you tried installing the latest OEM drivers / Veritas drivers and testing it out?
i have tried the newest drivers from sony
date: 8/31/2004
version: 1.0.0.4
and i tried the last drivers from symantec / veritas
date: 3/27/2006
version: 5.1.7.0
both the same problem.
If you disable the verify option in the backups then even backup exec would be able to write to the tapes just like your tape tools. Tape tools doesn't verify whatever is written to the device!
Will you try backing up just a single text file to the tape with verify enabled and let us know if the issue persists??
Also try a backup without verify enabled. You could then try running an explicit verify job manually and observe the results of it!

Hello,
I can backup small amount off data
the job ends with an error after 2~8 GB
so i tested as you told me with 1 single text file, and no problem at all, even with the verify option.
Does the error occur on B2Ds?
Does the bakcup to tape fail without verify option enabled after 2-8GB??

i did an backup to disk, and that is working OK (280GB).
now i'm testing with another server / hardware with my library.
If i found something news, i will report it here
