Effectiveness of SEP

Created: 30 Nov 2012 | 3 comments

Are there any plans to add features to SEP 12.1.2 going forward to increase effectiveness?  We've been evaluating other solutions for our endpoint anti-malware solution and have found other products that appear to be more effective.  For example, with SEP, we can open e-mails with infected zip files without a problem, the files can be extracted and then SEP will detect a malware injection event and trigger an alert.  However with other products, when opening attachments from e-mail you can't even open a message with malware in it with the preview pane, other solutions disinfect and clean the message before its ever presented to the user for action.

So we're just wondering if aside from basic compatibility for Windows 8, will there be any improvements or additional features implimented that will increase the effectiveness of SEP.  Currently, we are not impressed with the level of protection we are getting with the product.

Do you utilise Download Insight?

Not sure what features others offer as opposed to SEP. The piece you mention above is simply an email protection feature whihc most all products have. SEP simply appears to react differently for you. Not sure why for you as from what I've seen SEP stops the file from being opened.

This sounds like something that the mail server-side protection suites would do, i.e. Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange. It is possible that features in one product or suite by another company don't completely line up with Endpoint Protection.

Version 12.1.2 has already been released. These may interest you, in addition to Brian's list up there, particularly the Security Response recommendations.
