Server SBS2008 / Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.671.4971 . Embedded database service stops but can be restarted. Ran a repair of the SEPM successfully. Ran dbvalidator which said it passed. Attached scm-server-0.log. Service stays running for about 6-8 hours.

Also a fatal error in Windows Application log. image attached

    What's next?

    "Caused by: java.sql.SQLException: [Sybase][JDBC Driver][SQL Anywhere]Database server not found"

Have you considered upgrading to the latest version, RU3? You're running the first version of 12.1.

    How's the space on C:?

When did this start? Any changes made previously, updates, etc?

    Any patches installed lately?

My mistake - SEP on server is 12.1 SEPM is 12.1.2015.2015 (RU2)

    Started about 1 month ago.

    LAst windows updates installed 4/22/2013

    Free space on Sepm drive C = 64g; db size = 4g

I could upgrade to 12.3 but if it doesn't work ?? I could restore from backups before 1 month ago, but what to restore. What exactly is causing the service to stop? The db passes the tests and it does start.

I would say the server log is showing the dtabasae server can't be found because the database service is stopped. I can start it but it stops a few hour later.

If it's the DB service that's stopping, then the logs you posted and the aforementioned logging won't really help (all they'll say is that the DB is unavailable).

Looking within the directory containing the DB itself, can you see an err.log or out.log file?  Also what'are the sizes of the sem5.db and sem5.log files?

Directory is usually: %ProgramFiles%\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db

    Hello,

It is recommended to Migrate the same to the Latest version of SEP 12.1.3001

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH206823

As an alternative, try these steps below:

    1) Stop the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager and Symantec Embedded Databaseservices.
    2) Rename or delete the current sem5.log
    3) Click Start Run and type CMD then click OK
    4) In the Command Prompt type:
        For 32-bit: CD C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\ASA\win32\
        For 64-bit: CD C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\ASA\win32\
    5) Press Enter. This will change directories to the folder containing dbsrv11.exe.
    6) To force the recreation of sem5.log, type:
        For 32-bit: dbsrv11 -f "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db\sem5.db"      (There is a space after -f and "C:\...)
        For 64-bit: dbsrv11 -f "C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db\sem5.db"     (There is a space after -f and "C:\...)
    7) Press Enter
    8) Click Start > Run and type services.msc then click OK
    9) Start the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager and Symantec Embedded Databaseservices.

    Hope that helps!!

Erm, don't do these steps unless you have to, as you will lose any data not yet committed to the DB (this  deletes and recreates the transaction log).  And as such, never do these without first investigating the err.log and out.log files I mentioned earlier.

Also, the above won't work for your version of SEP.  SEP12.1RU2 requires you use dbsrv12 as per:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH134782

    Hello,

I agree with SMLatCST. It would important to check your err.log and out.log files before you work on those steps provided above.

Secondly, when was the last time you restart your server? Consider restarting your server.

However, you may consider the above steps as an alternative.smiley

Possibly, you may also check the Disaster recovery steps - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH160736

    Hope that helps!!

Might be worth running a chkdsk if the disk read errors in the err.log file are anything to go by.

Also, the below articles suggests the sqla000.tmp files you reported should no longer be created now that you've recreated the transaction log:

Hello SMLatCST, i started seeing this database is down lately at client site... The error is fatal read/write of the hard disk, i keep repairing the DB which does not resolve this... i will run disk check and post the error here too... It`s embarrassing to see read/write error all the time when the hard disk has over 140gb free space, what could be the problem?
