  • 1.  Encryption breaks when attaching another email-message as a file

    Posted Aug 12, 2015 12:35 PM

    Hello everyone,

    we have the following scenario:

    - User creates a new email (HTML format), the user will then attach another email message as a file that is encrypted and in a HTML format.
    - The user then sends the message to a recipient that has PGP as well
    - The recipient can open the attached encrypted message just fine, but the actual body does not get decrypted, even though the recipient has the sender's key

    We're on 10.3.2 (MP7), Outlook 2013 32-bit in an Exchange environment.

    Any help is appreciated!

The user just tried sending me a message, I am on 10.3.2 MP7 as well, Outlook 2013 32-bit:

Mail body was garbled, and I was not able to open the attachment since it was not intended for me.

The attached files were: example-message.msg, Attachment2.pgp and PGPexch.rtf.pgp

Log says the following when trying to open the mail:

17:39:39 Email     Info    Processing message from John Doe <john.doe@example.com> with subject: FW: Example Message

17:39:39 Email     Error    MAPI Proxy: Caught PGPSE_Exception exception in CreateDecypheredMsg. Exception code 0xc0000005

Basically, the attachment email broke the email body. The user has my public key and can send me encrypted emails just fine, as long as there are no attached external emails ..

I have seen this behavior before, and the body should be decryptable in PGP Viewer if the message was encrypted to your key.  From what I have seen, it only occurs when an encrypted message is set as an attachment, and then the newly-composed email is set to encrypt as well.

I think it recognizes the attachment as already encrypted, so instead of being able to encrypt the entire message, including attachment, it can only encrypt what has not already been encrypted, i.e. the message body.  The exception may then be thrown as the entirety of the message is not in a valid PGP format.

That makes sense. I thought it would be a RTF problem, guess I was wrong :(

    Are there any known workarounds?

You can either copy the text block, then right-click the tray icon, select Clipboard>Decrypt & Verify, or try to open it in PGP Viewer.  That's all I have found that works so far.

Unfortunately that is already too much for management (clicking-wise). I have instructed them to forward emails rather than attaching them.

I just noticed that you're in Symantec's tech support, would it be possible for you to forward this to the devs by any chance?

Thank you for your help so far! :)
