End marker unreadable and frozen backup

Hi,

I have a backup running for 3 days now. This backup loads a new tape about every 10/12 hours. The last inserted tape was 24 hours ago now ! If I look at the number of bytes copied, it hasnt't change in 9 hours, but the job is still running according to backup exec. I see in backup exec that the tape currently in the drive is in an "End marker unreadable" state. Can this state be the reason why the backup is frozen ?

I would think that it cant. All of my backup jobs are configured to always be written to new tapes. I never mix 2 jobs on a single tape. And I have already seen "End marker unreadable" tapes being overwritten by a backup and the new backup always erased the "End marker unreadable" state.

Thanks

Backup Exec 2012 has a known issue where empty tapes are shown as "end marker unreadable".  This is just a GUI issue, so it isn't related to your job being hung.

Are you using a stand-alone tape drive or a robotic library?

Are there any alerts for this job?

If you find this is a solution for the thread, please mark it as such.

The "end marker unreadable" problems was resolved with SP1a.  If you are not on BE 2012 SP1a and the latest hotfixes, you should run LiveUpdate a couple of times to update it.  Run LU until it says no more updates.

I don't think this issue was fixed in SP1a.  I "think" I have seen it since then.  There is no mention of it being fixed in the SP1a release notes.  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH189907

- Tapes are being marked as "end marker unreadable" when appending to media with hardware encrypted AVVI backups or duplicates ( TECH191134 )

unless the OP is using hardware encrypted AVVI backups, I don't theink SP1a has the fix for the cosmetic issue that I think the OP is seeing.  The OP says he is fully patched anyway.

backup exec is up to date. all SP and hotfixes are installed.

I am using a robotic library.

I have no alert on the job but the job is not copying anything on tape anymore. I backuped 10T out of 13, and now nothing. Backup exec says it is running. But it has been using the same tape for 36 hours now... it is just frozen I guess. I have another discussion here about the hanging : https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/mon...

I have installed all updates, including SP2, and stil seeing this error.

Once again, I'm simply amazed over the number of bugs in Backup Exec...no matter which client's server I look at. Up to and including 2011...this program was very versatile and usefull. Now this?!?

Klaus: If none of the advice above has helped you, then I'd suggest opening a support call with Symantec around this. Post back with the solution and then close this off.

Thanks!
