Endpoint 11.x GUI Fails to Launch

I turned on debugging and turned up the verbosity and found this in the log:

12/14 19:37:27 [1956:3452] Found EXPLORER.EXE pid=2500

12/14 19:37:27 [1956:3452] SmcGui mode 1

12/14 19:37:27 [1956:3452] GUI Process has died with error code 997

Can I have an explanation on what 'error code 997' resembles?

All prior output looks normal.  As soon as the services are started, smcgui.exe keeps trying to start.  My cursor indicates a pointer and hour glass figure every second, then goes back to a curor, and so forth.  Every ten seconds or so, smcgui.exe tries to start but cannot.  SymCorpUI.exe fails to launch with a failed to initialize properly error (0xc0000034).  All services are indeed functioning.  For instance, I can kill a process and trigger the tamper protection service.  The issue is that I cannot modify the settings of these services without access to the GUI.

Specifications: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (x86)

Symantic Endpoint 11.0.3001.2224

I have researched quite extensively and found absolutely no literature on solving this issue.  I could potentially solve this if I at least had an explanation on error codes easily available.  If anyone can point me to an explanation on error codes or propose a solution, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem.  I edited the boot.ini and set /noexecute to alwaysoff.  It would probably be a more secure choice to have it optin or optout and add Symantec accordingly.  I will leave it as such for now just to eliminate it as a possible preventative.

The DEP dialog is all grayed out and my boot.ini is still intact after reboot.  The same error appears upon running the GUI.  Any other suggestions?
