Endpoint Protection 11 and Symantec Corporate Edition 9

Created: 04 Dec 2007 • Updated: 21 May 2010 | 5 comments

Currently the company server has the following setup:

Windows 2003 SP2
Symantec Corparate Edition 9 security console
Symantec Corparate Edition 9 client

The company has about 50 computers.

I have several questions with Endpoint Protection 11:

1)  Can Endpoint Protection 11 be installed with Symantec Corparate Edition 9?

2)  How do I upgrade Symantec Corparate Edition 9 to Endpoint Protection 11?

3)  Can Endpoint Protection 11 be running at the same time with Symantec Corparate Edition 9?

4)  Is Endpoint Protection 11 compatible with Symantec Corparate Edition 9 clients on the workstation and server?

Hi RZetlin,

I'm assuming your first question is asking can the two versions coexist in your company environment and they can.  The caveat is that they will be managed through different consoles...the SAVCE 9.x with the SSC and the Endpoint Protection via the Endpoint Protection Manager.

There are several ways of upgrading.  You can use the use the migration wizard that is installed when you install the Endpoint Protection Manager (which should be detailed in the documentation), you can use 3rd party tools like SMS or Tivoli, or Symantec currently will provide an evaluation copy of Altiris to assist in deployment.

Depends on what you mean by "running at the same time".  On the same machine, no.  In a mixed environment where they are on separate machines, managed by separate consoles, yes.

The Endpoint Protection Manager will not be able to manage any legacy Corporate Edition Clients.  If you are going to have a mixed environment (which, if you decide to evaluate and get familar with v11.0 prior to deploying it you probably will) you will need both management consoles until you get all clients migrated to v11.0

Here is a link to a FAQ that answers some questions around Symantec Endpoint Protection and migration:

1)  Can Endpoint Protection 11 be installed with Symantec Corparate Edition 9?
ans: No. Installing the SEP 11.0 agent will automatically remove SAVCE 9.

2)  How do I upgrade Symantec Corparate Edition 9 to Endpoint Protection 11?
ans: for client, it is simple - just overinstall. For the server, if you have reporting server installed on the Parent Server, you need to remove it first. Second, please pay particular attention to the existing server capacity since there is stated requirement for the SEP 11.0 Management Server.

3)  Can Endpoint Protection 11 be running at the same time with Symantec Corparate Edition 9?
ans: same as 1,sorry No.

4)  Is Endpoint Protection 11 compatible with Symantec Corparate Edition 9 clients on the workstation and server?
ans: same as 1,sorry No.

I seem to be getting two different answers.

One say Endpoint Protection 11  can be installed with Symantec Corporate Version 9.

While another person say I have to uninstall Symantec Corporate Version 9 first before I can install Endpoint Protection 11.

Hi,
SEP manager can be installed on the machine running sav 9.x but if u try to install SEP client, it will uninstall sav 9.x. Hope this answers ur question.

I'm going to piggyback on this topic. I have SAV9 running in our environment, and have tried upgrading clients to SEP11. However, whether I export the install folder and manually run it, or try the deployment wizard on a machine running SAV9, I always get the message "Please uninstall your legacy Symantec AntiVirus product before installing Symantec Endpoint Protection."

How do I go about doing this "automatic upgrade," when I keep getting this message?
