Recently i upgraded to Windows 7 SP 1 x64 and Endpoint Protection 11.0.7101.1056 . What i noticed, is strange issue with tray icon. Sometimes it's just not showing, tho SEP running without problems and detecting viruses. After restarting PC, icon returns, but same issue can return after next reboot. Help.. maybe some tweaking needed?? Any advice?

is there a policy where you configured the tray to be hidden and this system/user has different policy each time.

This is somehow related to file SmcGui.exe.

When i have icon, i have that file in processes. But sometimes it's not there, and no icon...

    Any ideas???

I have computers with custom shell (game club program)

On my Windows XP machines after booting SEP icon is not showing at once. But after user start some disk activity program, like explorer, task manager  - icon showed up without problem.

Same is on my Windows 7 x64 machines, with one difference. If explorer or task manager launched at once after PC startup  - icon starts without problem, but if computer left intact for like 10 minutes, no icon at all no matter what i do. And i noticed that SmcGui.exe is up on startup but getting closed in some minutes for some weird reason.

So, what can i try to do?

    Getting really desperate :-(

Oh and one most important thing.

On my Windows XP machine i have

c:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\smc.exe running after PC startup.

On Windows 7 x64 not. Maybe issue have some connection to smc.exe?

On a Windows 7 machine, disable UAC (User Account Control) setting and execute repair.

    Update the status please...

    Cheers!!

I tested the below and it seemed to work. I had this issue on a couple of my machines as well.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SMC

On the right hand side, make sure, SmcGuiIsSilent is set  to 0.

Also, trayIconDefault is set to 1.

Once you change the setting you need to restart smc:

    WINDOWS+R (Run) > smc -stop > ok

    WINDOWS+R (Run) > smc -start > ok

That should do it. Good luck!

    Hello,

Are you trying to RDP to the Windows 7 machine??

Is this happening only on Windows 7 machines and not on Windows XP machine??

Is the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender Turned off from the services.msc on the Windows 7 machine?

Again, You view the client's desktop through a remote session

The system tray icon is not displayed if you view the client's desktop by using a Terminal Services Remote Administration or Remote Desktop connection. Confirm that the system tray icon is visible on the local client.

    Hope that helps!!

    Hello!

No im not talking about RDP, and yes, firewall state is off (managed by vendor application SEP)

I repeat, if i turn on windows explorer or just task manager right after booting my PC, icon coming and stays. But if i leave PC intact for 8-10 mins then icon is gone forever until next reboot.

On my XP machines everything works like charm.

I am sorry to giving wrong info :-(

The thing is - that my Windows XP clients were on earlyer build. With new one (11.0.7101.1056) same problem is on XP machines too.
