  • 1.  Endpoint Protection - Licensing Iaas Servers

    Dear all,

I am looking licening/purchase tips for Endpoint Protection, offered via Iaas (Infrastructure as a service).

    Background

    • Currently I have approxmiately 1000 servers within my datacenter. We are looking to have servers that are protected by Endpoint Protection (there will be machines and thin clients that access the server).
    • We will be a IAAS (Infrastructure as a Service) partner. The servers reside and are created in the data center

What would be the approporiate product and purchasing program type, and any other advise would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help on this matter.

You can go with Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 Enterprise Edition or you can go with SEP.cloud on-prem or in the cloud. You just need to buy enough licenses to cover your clients.

If you want Symantec to host the SEPM then go with SEP.cloud version. If you want to manage it yourself then go with SEP.cloud on-prem or SEP Enterprise.

There is a comparison chart here:

Thank you for the reply Brian, really appreciated.

The Servers will be physically based in my data center with SEP installed. Then, we aim to provision this software as Iaas (Infrastructure as a Service)... if this makes sense?

Another comment, when licensing this envionment, is there any guides or tips?

    • Do I issue one license per server?
    • Do thin clients requires licenses?

Want to ensure I license this with the correct program and amount of licenses.

Again, thank you very much for your help, and anyone else's input is greatly appreciated!

Each client requires a license, even thin clients.

    Ok great Brian.

    • So even if the thin client does not have SEP directly installed, it requires a license? and any machine accessing the server will require a license?

I.e. Because the server is protected, and a thin client/machine "accessing" creates an "instance"...therefore each thin client/machine requires an additional license.

Would this fall under an ExSP buying program?

If a thin client does not have a SEP client then it does not consume a license. Only clients that have SEP installed require a license.

Within the SEP EULA section 17.3.B it states:

"17.3.B Terminal Servers. If You purchase a license of the Licensed Software for use on a hardware device/server that provides endpoints with a common connection point to a local or wide area network (a "Licensed Terminal Server"), and such Licensed Terminal Server(s) is/are accessed by endpoints that do not have installed copies of the Licensed Software ("Thin Clients"), then every Thin Client accessing a Licensed Terminal Server is considered an "instance" and must have a valid license to the Licensed Software. In the event that Your Licensed Terminal Server(s) is/are accessed by endpoints which have authorized copies of the Licensed Software already installed ("Thick Clients"), such access of the Licensed Terminal Server(s) by Thick Clients shall not be considered additional "instances" and You are not required to purchase additional licenses to the Licensed Software."

So I assumed a thin client that accesses the terminal server require a license?

If that thin client accessing the TS has a SEP client on it it will take up a license. If the thin client without SEP accesses the TS, it does not require an additional license.

Each running instance (physical and/or virtual) must be licensed.

If you looking specifically laas (Infrastructure as a service) then SEP.cloud will be a product. Howeve let me know if need any help from Symantec marketing team,

As explained below, if you want your thin clients to have SEP on them, then you've got to license it.

The ExSP program is specifically designed for that purpose.

The SEP.cloud Partner Management Console lets you create the clients.  From there, when you "manage" the client, you can install the software to individual desktops and apply the necessary client-base policies to them.
