Hello,

This is my first post and any and all information would be appreciated. I'm doing tech support for a small company. They run Ms SBS 2003 and a MAS 90 server and the network consists of 6 pcs. They called me today with concerns about their norton antivirus subscription running out. I believe they have a Norton/symantec antivirus product running on the server but at this point I'm not sure which one it is. Each of the pcs on the network run windows xp pro 32 bit and have norton's 360 installed. So I have a few questions.

First, if it's Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which has been discontinued is it possible to buy a subscription for virus definitions without having to upgrade to something else.

Second, if they have to upgrade to endpoint protection small business edition will they still need to have something like norton 360 installed on each of the pcs? Or is part of SEP small business loaded on to each of the clients to protect them from viruses, malware and such?

Lastly, I've never used symantec's business products and my experience with any windows server os is negligible. Is there a crash course in endpoint protection small business edition that I can read that will tell me how to configure it so that everyone will still get their mail and be able to browse the web and connect to the MAS 90 server.

PS
If you're wondering the company fired the guy that took care of the all the tech support. My brother works there and he told the owner I'm good with computers so they called me. I have taken classes for an MSCE but never finished them so I'm not a complet noob.

Any help info and opinions will be greatly appreciated.

hi

First, if it's Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which has been discontinued is it possible to buy a subscription for virus definitions without having to upgrade to something else.
a: if it comes with license and if licens have expired symantec antivirus wil not get definitins, you need to get new license, nortan will run fine without doing and upgrade, u first need to check the license

if they have to upgrade to endpoint protection small business edition will they still need to have something like norton 360 installed on each of the pcs? Or is part of SEP small business loaded on to each of the clients to protect them from viruses, malware and such?

a: Nortan is consumer product not an enterprise, if u r planning to do an upgrade, uninstall nortan install small business on each pcs.

to install small business, read this document

It sounds like the best

It sounds like the best product for your environemnt would be SEP 12 SBE. SEP 12 comes with AV/AS, NTP, IPS, and is easy to set up (installation and deployment takes less than 20 minutes)  and you have the options to install only the features you want

Try a free 30 day trial  - http://www.symantec.com/business/endpoint-protecti...

If you have any questions or issues installing, please post back here in the forums.

Best,
Thomas

Reading / Depends on Product....

Hi Gallienus,

First off: wishing you the best of fortune in your new role! :)  I remember being very confused when I first started working with SBS 2003, but in time it's become quite familiar and easy to work with. SBS can be a capable all-in-one solution for small offices like you describe.  Just make sure that it does not run out of resources!!

Most of the advice to give will depend on what Symantec product the company decides to go for.  If those existing computers are using Norton 360 or similar, that's a consumer (as opposed to business) product and is very dependant on subscription to remain up-to-date.  Norton can't be centrally managed, like Symantec Endpoint Protection or Symanthec AntiVirus.  I've seen whole offices that had consumer products installed throughout, but it's better off going for something that is designed to do an Enterprise/business job.

Either SEP 11 or (prefereably) SEP 12 will work well with SBS 2003, and there are several bundles which sell those together wih Symantec Mail Security for MS Exchange (protection against virus and spam for the mail serve part of SBS).  I recommend reading the detailed product info for each that is available on Symantec's website, and also the following:

Best Practices documents for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 on Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security....)

Best Practices document for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange on Microsoft Small Business Server (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-gate.nsf/...)

Please do feel free to put any further details or question to the forum, and best of luck once again!

Thanks and best regards,

Mick

With thanks and best regards,

Mick

Hi, You may want to consider

Hi,

You may want to consider Protection Suite Small Business Edition as it also includes Mail Security for exchange 2003.

I have have just recently purchase this to deploy to a SBS network and it seems very straight forward to setup.

One point to note it the management sever uses a lot of memory, so I moved this to a separate server which just manages this.

Still trying to get my head around deploying the centralised exceptions, but think I'm starting to win.

Protection Suite is great

Ill second the post above me and add that it also comes with Symantec Backup Exec Desktop Recovery software, which also works fantastically.
