Endpoint Protection too much

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hello,

I'm new around here, and have a question that I know is probably easily answered.

We are getting ready to install about 9 PCs in an office and have found out that standard Endpoint Protection has a few components, namely Network Threat Protection & Proactive Threat Protection, that cause grief for the users. We are looking into using a "stripped down" version that only provides antivirus & antispyware. In short: it's a bit TOO much for what we need.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to whether a product like this is available from Symantec? Is there a version of Endpoint Protection that provides only the antivirus & antispyware pieces?

Many thanks,
Chris

hi

you can have just antivirus with the same product
while creating the package just select antivirus and antispyware, install it ;thats it
if you are installing as stand alone
then open sep folder
run the setup.exe
select custom
in the drop down menu ; select network and proactive and select these components will not be isntalled on the local hard drive; thats it ; only AV will be installed

in this just select Antivirus and Antispyware during pacakage creation

I see. So we'll just need to

I see. So we'll just need to install it manually and de-select the proactive threat protection & network threat protection pieces? Sorry, just need to be clear when I report back. I'm just the researcher. :)

Thanks for the response!

Not quite.  You can install

Not quite.

You can install only AV remotely via the console. You build an install package which *only* installs AV. This will not install the Firewall driver, HIPS, etc. This is what we do for our servers (And is a Symantec recommendation for Servers).

However, if you install the full package and just disable the policies, The drivers are still installed and loaded.  This can lead to problems with the Teefer2 (firewall) driver and should be avoided if you aren't going to use it anyway.

In summary, SEP11 can do exactly what you need and is very customizable fit any installation.

SEP 11 can be installed with

SEP 11 can be installed with just AV/AS. Another product that may be a better fit for your needs is SEP 12 SBE. This can also be installed with just the AV/AS features on the agents.

You should note that with todays threats, an AV only solution is not recommended. You need many layers of protection against the modern day threats that are out in the wild.

Since you just have 9 clients

Since you just have 9 clients so might have Installed Unmanaged.

At the time of installation you get the option to choose what you want to install then you can select Just Antivirus and Antispyware.

If you already have them installed.
Go to Add/Remove programs --Select Symantec Endpoint Protection -Change -modify
and de-select other features except the antivirus and Antispyware--next-install.

You'll just have AV.

Note that!

You can obviously remove PTP and NTP but if you do it is more likely that your system will be infected easily. Specially for Laptop users you should have NTP installed.

Cheers!

Do you have an SEP manager

Do you have an SEP manager setup or just clients (It could make things easier)? Try disabling them first to see if it works. Most problems usually come from the NTP. PTP doesn't have any noticeable negative effect in our PCs here.

An other product may be bether

If the total amount of PCs in your office is 9 and you don't have any servers, then I'll suggest you use an other product, like Norton Internet Security or Norton 360.

You bought the wrong product!

You bought the wrong product!  And Norton anything is not the right one.

What you want is Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 Small Business Edition.  It's much much simpler, cheaper, and easier to manage and deploy.

You can even trade in your purchase to transition to that version at no cost.
