Enterprise Vault 8.0.4 upgrade into version 9.0.4 caveats and pitfalls

Hi People,

Can anyone please share with me how to do the inline upgrade safely for my Enterprise Vaults 8 into version 9 safely within the same Windows Server 2003 32 bit ?

What to do and what not to do before doing the upgrade.

The SQL Server 2005 SP3 is on different physical server so it is easy to backup per database.

Make sure all your databases are backed up
Make sure all your vault store partitions are backed up
Make sure all your index locations are backed up
Try to not archive anythin shortly before hand to make sure that the queues aren't going to be full
Ensure that if you have a legal team using discovery accelerator that they dont try and push searches through when you're doing the upgrades
For the SQL Backups, try to back them up to disk locally so if you do need to restore you can get it easily from those backups as opposed to having to try and retrieve them from tape

If you can, roll out the EV9 SP4 Rollup2 client out to everyone so you have your clients are on the same level.

Try not to keep any SQL Management Studios open with query results showing or anything like that, part of the upgrade process is to put the database in single user mode and if there is a SQL Management Studio open, the EV Server will throw a 13360

If you have multiple EV Servers, after the reboot of each install, start the directory service on one machine, await for the event ID to say its completed, then start the storage service and await for it to say that its completed, then move to the next EV Server and start directory and storage and so on and so forth

Don't start the indexing service until all storage services have been started and upgraded

Be sure to deploy SQL Reports if you use SQL Reporting Services
Be sure to upgade your OWA extensions if you use them

But honestly, an in place upgrade from EV8 to Ev9 will be over and done with before you know it, its just a next next finish type of deal.

If you do have DA, it will have to be upgraded also along with the EV API or EV Install Binaries for 9 SP4, you should check the upgrade path documentation for DA upgrades as it differs from EV

Cool, many thanks for the comprehensive report and explanation Jesus !

"roll out the EV9 SP4 Rollup2 client out to everyone so you have your clients are on the same level." does this needs to be done before or after the upgrade ?

Can the existing EV client version 8 SP4 reads the item in EV 9 ?

Hello John,

Rolling out the client can be done before or after, that does not really matter.

The client version is officially supported 1 up 1 down. Ie. the EV8 client supports EV2007, 8 and 9 server version.

Check this link:

It has a sheet I used to upgrade from 7.5 to 8. It is extensive, and you might be able to skip some steps. The process is the same. Verify the sheet next to the upgrade document, and see if it helps. especially when upgrading multiple EV-servers, it is helpfull to be able to tick steps.

John, sorry missed this question on what Synch means.

Sync in the sheet means that (if you have multiple servers to do in 1 go) you need to wait until you reached this step on all the servers.

When upgrading you install new binaries, then start the directory service on 1 server to upgrade the directory database. You have to wait for that to complete, before you continue with the next step = synch
