bpbkar log on the client

bptm and bpbrm log on the media server

These logs must cover the time period of the failure.

Details of the job from the details tab for the failed job in Activity Monitor

Then.

OS of master and media server and client (+ versions)

Version of NBU on master/ media/ client

Has this ever worked

When did it start to fail

Does it fail everytime

If it did work, what has changed

There are several errors in NetBackup that essentially require you to deduce the reason.

Error 6 is one of those.

For example, if you are backing up Oracle, NetBackup passes control to RMAN and if there are issues RMAN lets NetBackup know there were problems, and NetBackup ends with error 6.

You need to review the oracle log file to determine WHY the backup failed.

NetBackup 7.5.0.3 on Solaris 10

Actually means that the script the backup called returned a non-zero status

Usually the bphdb and dbclient(need 777 permission on unix) log on the client can give an indication of the problem

Have also found it useful to run the script directly from the prompt on the client

if you are backing up Oracle, sh.out file contains the Oracle error codes to figure out actual issue.
