    Posted Jul 15, 2016 02:44 PM

I've been following the TECH223783 article to create a Windows PE disk for decryption for EE 11.x and I keep running into an issue during step 4 while inputting the command eedpe.bat winpe.wim c:\eede I get the following error:

ERROR!!! C:\eede is missing some critical program files needed for recovery

I've started from step 1 a few times and go through the steps again and keep getting the same error at that step.

Any ideas as far as what I could be missing?

    What is the error?

    Joe,

I dont see anyhing related to the error you are recieveing that I found on another post:

Whenever I run the 'eedpe.bat winpe.wim c:\eede' command in step 5 I keep getting this error message:

"ERROR!!! C:\eede is missing some critical program files needed for recovery"

I've gone through from the beginning a few times with the same result. Any idea what I could be doing wrong?"

    Have  you checked permissions?

EEDE is the drive encryption service.  Are you running this on a system that already has Symantec Endpoint Encryption with the Drive Encryption component (not the Bitlocker Management package) installed?  That is where the necessary files should be that it is referencing.

If the system does have SEE 11.x installed with the Drive Encryption component, you may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling the software.

Permissions I think should be fine as I'm an admin on the machine. It sounds like it's missing a file from that folder, but I've gone through and triple checked and it has all the files in that folder that the article says it should.

SEE 11.x is already installed on the machine. Haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling yet though.

The article wasn't updated for 11.1.0.  From the 11.1.0 guide:

From a computer running Drive Encryption, copy the following files and transfer them to the c:\eede folder on a computer installed with Windows ADK.
    ■ C:\Program Files\Symantec\Endpoint Encryption Clients\Drive Encryption\*
    ■ %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\drivers\eed*.sys
    ■ %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\shfolder.dll
    ■ %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\drivers\PGPce.*

Note: The PGPce files are available only on Windows systems running Symantec Endpoint Encryption 11.1.0 or later.

https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH223783.html has the official technote/guide.  Might be better to follow that depending on your version.

    From the bat file:
IF NOT EXIST %2\PGPce.dll GOTO missingfile

    :missingfile
    echo -----------------
echo ERROR!!!  %2 is missing some crucial program files needed for recovery

So this is what you are most likely running into.

Yeah I'm not seeing the PGPce.dll file located on my system.

I was able to find PGPce.sys and the PGPce.sys.sig files in the %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\drivers\PGPce.*  folder and those are in the c:\eede folder already when running the command

Hi Mike Ankeny. I have Endpoint Encryption running with the version 11.0.1 . It is a fresh installation.I want to create Windows PE CD for EE 11.x for Disaster and Error Recovery. I have windows 7,8 and 10 in the network. Do I need to create PE CD for EE 11.x for each OS to work i.e Windows 7, 8 and 10 or I can create  PE CD for one OS and can re-use it on other OS , it will work or no?

Secondly If I create  PE CD for EE 11.x for Windows 7. Can I use this PE CD for all windows 7 machines in the network or am I required to create ED CD for each and every machine?

Your response is highly appreciated. Appreciate your response. Thanks and Regards

The OS for the PE disk should be backwards-compatible, e.g. Windows 7 PE may not work on Windows 8, but Windows 10 PE should work on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.  The best bet at this point is to make one on Windows 10 for that reason.

There is no need for a separate PE disk per machine or OS.  One PE disk should be able to work with any system in the environment.

I've tried using a different Windows ADK and now when running the eedpe.bat winpe.wim c:\eede command.

The error is "c:\eede is missing some crucial program files needed for recvoery"

I've checked the TECH223783 and I've copied the files it says to into that folder. Any ideas?

I have used ADK for windows 10 and it works just fine , try that one and follow the instructions mentioned in the manual and you are good to go!
