    All,
New to 11.0.x world I'm curious why I'm not able to install on one of my 2008 machines. there error I am getting is that the installer doesn't support Vista, yet the machine is 08.  I have installed 11.0.4202 on other 08 servers in my enviroment.
Has anyone come across this in the past? If so what did you do to get the install to complete?

    the exact error is

"this version of symantec antivirus does not support windows vista platforms"
Alll I can do is click OK then the install ends.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

What version of the installation package are you using (x86 or x64) and is your server 32 or 64 bit?

32 bit for the server, and 32 bit install package.

should it matter that this is a VM not a physical machine?

Are you absolutely positive you're installing MR4 MP2 client on the server?  The only reference I could find is this: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/problems-installing-seps-110-windows-server-2008-standard

This is what I downloaded this morning and have been trying - Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_11.0.4202_MR4_MP2_AllWin_EN_CD1
Earlier in the week I was trying Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_11.0.4014_MR4_MP1_AllWin_EN_CD1
both installs gave the same error.

Well, how about looking at the installation log on your problem server.  Start/Run %temp% <enter> then open the SEP_INST.LOG scroll to the bottom and work your way up until you find some errors or "return value 3".  Alternatively, if you can post that log were we can download it, that would be helpful.  Hopefully someone who had the same problem will chime in.

You could also open a case with Tech Support if you want a faster response.

the rabbit hole is getting deeper here. I just remembered this server was upgarde to server 2008 from server 2003. And it turns out that smantec AV 10.1 is running... I think I'm going to uninstall the version thats on it and try running the setup again.

Couldn't find a link.  I suggest a call into tech support and getting the Cleanwipe utility.

    Just FYI...
When you install SEPM on a windows 2008 box, SEPM recognizes the OS as "Windows Vista".

Just backing up what Rick said. This error happens specifically when a legacy version of SAV has been previously installed and not yet uninstalled. The case we had previously with this also had trouble uninstalling SAV using the regular approach. So we supplied cleanwipe and everything went fairly smoothly after that. Again to be clear you must call in and make a case in order to obtain cleanwipe. You might also ask what is the issue with the confusion with Windows 2008 and Vista. I havn't heard of this yet and I would love to hear what the exact problem was. Cheers and hopefully everything goes smoothly.

    Grant-

You guys are right, the fact that this machine was once a 2k3 server was the problem. Here is how it must have happened...

My predecessors installed a windows 2k3 server
Installed the Symantec 10.1.5 client on the machine
Then at some point upgraded the 2k3 machine to 2k8 without uninstalling Symantec 10.1.5
When I tried to install the 11.0.4 MR4 MR2 the 10.1.5 client made a call to uninstall itself, thus triggering the error about "vista"

The steps I took to get 11.0.4 on was follow this KB

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2006022212084148?Open&docid=2002031914291648&nsf=ent-security.nsf&view=docid

    Then reboot the server
    Run setup again
    and Voila! it installed fine!

Thanks for all your help guys!
