Error Installing SQL Server 2005 Express Service Pack 4
Windows Server 2008 R2. Backup Exec 2010 R3. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Service Pack 4.
I have traced a problem I am having with the Backup Exec services not coming back up after a reboot following automatic updates. The problem is associated with the automatic update of SQL Server 2005 Express Service Pack 4 failing. I am now trying to install this update manually by going to:

and downloading SQLEXPR.EXE (the first download listed). The download page says that it is for SQL Server 2005 Express Service Pack 4. But when I run this download it gives me the impression that it is INSTALLING the entire product rather than UPDATING the product. I stopped the process before it actually started the install and came here to post.
MY QUESTION: Is it safe to run through the above mentioned installation without fear that it will overwrite or mess up anything I have already configured on my system, in particular the BEDB database that is currently running in the existing SQL Server 2005 Express instance?

It should not mess up
It should not mess up anything, but just in case, you should use BEUtility to backup the BEDB before you install the SP. BEUtility is found in the BE installation directory.

Followed Instructions and Still Got a Fatal Error
I followed the instructions from the linked article to attempt installing service pack 4. Toward the end of the installation I received the dialogue:
The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Setting Internal Properties. The error is: Fatal error during installation.
Man what a pain this (and everything else associated with Symantec products) is! I read one person suggesting that I simply turn off the update for service pack 4. But this is not an acceptable "solution" in my view. Any other suggestions?

The instructions you link to are for SP3. I assume that you are suggesting that this will work for SP4 as well?
Okay. I "manually" installed
Okay. I "manually" installed the SR4 update by donwloading from the link in my original post and running as Administrator from my desktop. It gave no errors on installation, indicating successful installation. I even rebooted the server after installation. However, when I go to Control Panel> Programs and display all installed programs and updates, the update for SQL Server 2005 Express SR4 DOES NOT appear. Moreover, when I go to Windows Update, it still tells me that the SR4 update needs to be installed. ANY help will be greatly appreciated here. Thanks.

sugestion is to remove that update from WU and download SP4 from MS site....
but you need to do it in that order, from the looks of it

Nick Elmer of Symantec led me through the solution to this and another issue as follows (these are his words):
Positive Finish
For the benefit of others...
Got in touch with Chaplain Doug and identified that the mentioned technote above did apply to his system. (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH64580) We found the keys under the Wow3264 hive, removed them and the SQL SP4 installed via windows update successfully.
In addition, the system was also receiving failures running a Hyper-V backup, so we applied SP2 for Backup Exec without issue http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH158461
