Try pointing it to the new msi file. I had to do this once before without the old msi. I think the installer played up though, not installing the latest version and leaving your machine without PGP Desktop - DON'T restart if this happens because Windows won't be able to boot. Instead, run the installer again and it should go on ok.

It's been a little while since I had that problem, so I'm going off memory, but give it a try.

Copy the file to local folder, then execute and install.

Thanks for your replies.  In order to find the msi file should I search the 'c' drive and search for *.msi.  From there I can either use the path the search finds or move the 'pgpdesktop.msi' file to where the error screen is looking for the 'pgpdesktop.msi' file.  Is that correct?  Is one better than the other??

    Thanks, John

I don't think either are better as long as it's pointed to the file. Give either a try and the install should continue.

Thanks for your quick reply Julian.  the error message verbatem is: the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'pgpdesktp.msi' in the box below.

My last questions is how do I find the .msi file to point to it so PGP will respond appropriately.  this is just my lack of how do I?

    Thanks,

    John

This is a known issue. Best practices recommendation is to copy the MSI down locally to a location on the C drive and then run the installer there. The same thing can be done when it's prompting for the MSI. The installer doesn't always work when installing an MSI from a network share.

Thanks Ben, my question is: How do I copy the MSI locally?  Is the MSI (I don't know what that stands for) the exe file or just part of it?  If I knew how find the msi I could copy it to the desk top and then proceed from there.  On this issue, I guess I am in the connect the dots stage.  I appologize for not getting it.

You can copy the file this way:
Drag the file, drop into your desktop.
You can right click on it, copy. Then right click on desktop, paste.

    Execute..you are done :)

The msi file you are looking for will have a name something like PGPDesktop-10-2.msi

The msi is basically the installation file, similar to an exe. An exe might have an msi 'inside' it, but it's not really something users would have to worry about if that was the case.

If you have an EXE, the MSI is embedded in the EXE file. Do you not have a PGP Universal Server? The Universal Server provides you with the MSI installer. If not, the EXE is extracted into the %temp% directory in a folder (random folder generated) when running the EXE installer. You could extract the MSI out of there.
