Error message on console - Out Of Memory

  • 1.  Error message on console - Out Of Memory

    Posted May 25, 2016 06:37 AM

We recently installed a fresh install of server 2012, SQL Express 2014 and Solution Suite 3.1

Server has 16gb Ram and 2 Tb Hard drive for the shared folder. Currently we have around 300 PCs being managed with another 300 soon to be added

3 times in the past 2 weeks when ive remoted in to the server an error message is displayed on the screen saying 'Out of Memory'

It hasnt been running any tasks or jobs to cause the system to run out of resources.

I checked the processes in task manager and there is only 5% cpu being used and 33% Ram being used. The only way to get rid of the message is to reboot the server.

Has anybody else had this issue?

    Thanks

This looks rather like a memory leak.

Have you run Windows Update to get both the server O/S and also SQL Express right up to date?

Is there anything in the Windows event log?

Hi - Thanks for the reply

Ive looked through the event log and nothing stands out as unusual

The server was updated on 3 May - ive just run the update and installed a few more updates for SQL and Seerver 2012

An "Out of Memory" error can come from any badly behaved software, including drivers. Since I've not seen any other postings about this error for Ghost, I would suggest that you check and update all drivers for your server hardware, including video, hard disk, network and chipset drivers.  Also google on any "out of memory" errors on your specific server make and model, just in case it's an issue that has been encountered before.

Do not exclude the possibility of a hardware fault also. Try running a memory diagnostic overnight as a sticky bit could be reporting incorrect information on stack sizes.

Ive googled it and nothing comes up for the server we are using

Ive already updated to the latest drivers for all the hardware

could the issue be related to SQL express 2014 as i know there is a limitation on it compared to the SQL standard 2014 ?

SQL Express 2014 appears to have a limitation of 50 instances. I think your 430 clients may need you to use the full version of SQL Server.

Since it's been stated there has been no known issues with this, I'd like to add my comment as I'm having the same issue.

    - GSS 3.1 (Build 275) running on Windows Server W2K8 R2 (i5 @ 3.4Ghz...8G RAM) thru use of a "Simple Install" with SQL Server Express added.

    - only (1) test client listed on console as we're still testing whenever we can get time.

This didn't start happening until the upgrade to GSS 3.1 on 3/11/2016.

Realize we've been thru all the "Beta" testing stages, all (5) of the HFs' for GSS 3.0 and we've never encountered this problem until we upgraded to GSS 3.1.  We leave the server on 24/7 and we get this error a couple of times a week.

Can find no issues even after reading this post and verifying the suggestions offered here.  We did notice we had the console's Boot Disk Creator opened as we've been adding W10 drivers over time because of the wide range of hardware we have on this college campus.  As a process-of-elimination, we're going to leave the console open but with BDC closed to see if problem still persists.

    Thansk for your comment

We tested 3.0 HF1-HF5 and never had this issue. We did a clean install of 3.1 and not an upgrade

Our server is also on 24/7 and hasnt really been put through its paces yet as we still run Ghost 2.5 for most day to day things at the moment.

We only have ghost console running when we get the error and nothing else.

I used it to image some PCs yesterday and at the start SQL was using around 450Mb Ram now this morning thats upto 1.4Gb of Ram. If I reboot the server this will then drop back to around 450Mb.

I believe SQL Express is limited to 1Gb RAM, so again this may be limiting your experience.  However, there does appear to be a link to the 3.1 release being more demanding so I shall ask around.

We are reporting the same error, only our specs are differents :

    Windows 10 1511 (10586.318), Dell Poweredge T130, Xeon E3-1220 / 8Gbb DDR4 / 4Tb mirrored on a Raid 1 Perc S130

Our GSS 3.1 build 275 is idle most of the time, and has only 4 registered clients (450 will be added if we ever goes into production). Most often than not there's litterally hundreds of this "Out of memory" pop-up and the console is plain dead, which mean the server has to be restarted.

Task manager show only 2% CPU usage and 20% RAM usage when this occur.

    Reporting back.

If our GSS 3.1 console is left open without having any of the other tools open, over time, we receive the "Out of memory" dialog box.  "OK'ing the dialog box locks-up the system.  Have to forcibly close GSS.

In my case, it's not the SQL Server Express (steady at 622mb), it's "express.exe *32" (Symantec Ghost Solution Suite Management Console) that has climbed to a whopping 1.83G RAM from an initial 4.5mb according to Task Manager.

GSS 3.0 (GA) was initially installed using the simple install and has been upgraded thru the various stages, up to where it currently is (GSS 3.1 - Build 275).

    Hardware;

    Server 2K8 R2 Enterprise

    8GB RAM

I have no other applications on this box as it's being used exclusively to test GSS 3.X.  As stated in my prior post, the memory issue only came about after upgrading to GSS3.1 from 3.0 HF5.
