I'm having the same issue with Symantec Ghost 8.0 Enterprise. The machine is an Optiplex 745. The initial imaging was done with Altiris, but I'm not allowed to use Altiris to make a new image.

I found a solution. The Altiris initial deployment was doing something to the Master Boot Record. I used MBRWizard 2.0 Beta's repair function /repair=1. Now Ghost works fine.

Greetings, Where you able to make a normal ghost image after you ran MBRWizard? Did the image have any problems because of the MBRWizard repair?

Also, not sure what Altiris image does to mbr but could it be possible that the image was taken with the option of run chkdsk or diskeeper run at boot up cause this error? Any replies on this question will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, after running MBRWizard, I was able to make and distribute Ghost images with no problem. The imaged computers have been in service for 2 months now with no ill effects.

I'm afraid I can't speak to the questions in your second paragraph. What Altiris did to the MBR is still a mystery to me.

    Hi guys.

Usure myself; but from my testing it appears Altiris writes in the MBR that the drive is FAT when it's actually NTFS. I suspect that is part of it's bootstrapping that is left over...

Using the MBRWizd.exe to repair it is the only solution I've found thus far; and it is only needed on machines that has been created with Altiris (so far).

Greetings, Thanks everyone for the info supplied a co-worker fo mine ran the MBRWizard 2.0 fix and it worked as you said... He also found some interesting information that may shed some light as to why Altiris changes the MBR boot strap, this stemming from a patent law-suit information he found. Seems like Altiris and Symantec has a patent law suit vs each other going back from before they merged. You can read more of the patent Altiris has on MBR and the dispute between both of the companies on this link: http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/printer_friendly.pl?page=fed/021137.html Thanks everyone!!!

I had same issue. Can be caused by a number of factors, in my case, it was due to the machine being previously imaged by Altiris which seems to have f*cked the mbr up some how.

WinXP Recovery Console, then do a fixmbr and reboot - Works fine now.

My thanks to all those who posted, and especially tomhegarty.

FIXMBR worked for me, and I also was creating an image of a PC that had previously been created by Altiris when i received the 15210 error.

You can also run fdisk /mbr from a windows 98 startup disk and that will fix your mbr. I just tried it on a computer having this problem and that fixed the issue.

Hi. Thanks for the information. "fdisk /mbr" fixed a machine which I re-imaged with Altiris DS. Cheers!
