trying to convert a gho to a vmdk and I'm suddenly running into this message.  Can anyone provide any help or troubleshooting steps?

What version of Ghost was used to create the image?

Does the image restore successfully to a physical computer?

What sort of disk setup do you have in VMWare?  (IDE or SCSI ?)

If the image will not restore successfully to the physical computer it was created on, then the problem is most likely in the way the image was either created or is being deployed, and for the moment, we can exclude the VMWare aspect.

I'm assuming you are using WinPE as the boot environment for both recording the image after sealing it with sysprep, and for restoring it.  My initial "guess" is that the problem revolves around having the correct drivers installed in WinPE to be able to access the hard disk subsystem on your target environment.  It would be interesting to try and restore your image to a VM with an IDE disk subsystem rather than SCSI, as WinPE will natively support IDE hard disks but I'm not sure whether some drivers might need to be added to support SCSI virtual hard disks.

The bottom line, in my opinion, is that you need to get the issue of restoring your image to the source hardware sorted out before you turn to a VM environment.

The thing that gets me is that it is windows itsself telling me it cannot install on the hardware (during the deployment process, near the end).  What makes it even more frustrating is that last week everything worked fine.

Has the system had any bios upgrades or has anyone else had access to it, who may have changed bios settings?

Also, as one of MANY people who have spent time looking for a software problem when it eventually came to light that there was a hardware problem, it may be worth checking that the hard disk has not gone on the fritz.

One common issue is where an image has been taken with the bios set to IDE and is then being restored with the bios set to AHCI. Since one scenario needs no block drivers and the other does, this can cause mayhem.

Finally, it looks like you are imaging Windows 7 (from the build number in the log). Are you aware that a standard windows 7 install consists of two partitions and not one? If you are imaging and restoring just one partition you are going to find that the system will not boot. Also, as the first partition is typically 100Mb to 200Mb in size, trying to install an image of several Gb in size to 'partition 1' is going to fail as well, as there is not enough space on there to hold more than a small fraction of the main partition.
