Error receiving data from socket

We have had Altiris scraping 4 mailboxes and creating helpdesk incidents whenever an email is received by those mailboxes. Recently this stopped working and when I run the test connection on the configuration of these mailboxes in Helpdesk, I get the error "error receiving data from socket". Any ideas what may have changed to cause this? And wha can be done to correct it?

Oddly, this KB says restart mail server
This KB suggests two fixes, the second of which is restarting your POP server:
When testing the connection to the e-mail inbox, I get an error, "Error connecting to e-mail inbox"

Try setting up a desktop mail profile using the same server name, username, password, and protocol. If that works and Helpdesk doesn't, I'd look at your Helpdesk server. If that doesn't work and Helpdesk used to, I'd look at your mail server.
If you restart your POP server, are you able to successfully Test your inboxes?
