As all luck would have it my father in law messaged me saying he deleted a sent message he needs to retrieve. I ran a restore job and it failed I tried several different dates they all failed. The failed with the following message:
Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again.
Final error category: Resource Errors

Our system is an SBS 2008 server with Exchange 2007 and BE 12.5 rev2213. The Z drive in an externally attached USB HD.  Backup jobs have been running for quite some time without and errors reported.  I tried several different jobs with various options all failed with the same error code. I am betting it is something simple, can anyone lend any help – you know how father-in-laws can be sometimes.

Thanks,
Alan

I did a bit more searching

I did a bit more searching and found our my issue was all permissions related.  I used the default administrator account as opposed to my backup account and the restore finished without any issues.\

deleted items retention

I would imagine you could also "recover deleted items" from Outlook 2007 depending on your retention policy
