I am getting a lot of errors during the backup of CERTAIN MS Exchange Mailboxes and this only started happening about a month ago; before which everything worked very well.

There have been no software or hardware changes.

Here are some of the relevant portions of a Job Log:

- Job Completion Status

Job ended: 04 January 2007 at 02:42:37
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xa0008488 ? Access is denied.

Final error category: Security Errors

--------------------

Because these errors are only being produced on particular Mailboxes it cannot be that the BackupExec Logon Account doesn't have the required permissions to access these files. I also know that the relevant users have not got Outlook open during the time of backup so the particular files being skipped will not be 'in use'.

I will make the observation that ALL the errors are related to items in the 'Calendar' folder.

It makes Job Logs very uneasy reading when you see so many errors! :(

Does anyone have any ideas or fixes please?

Hi Glen,

Have you tried a redirect restore of the mailbox to another?

Please create a new account and try the restore.

Make sure that the account has Exchange Full Administrator rights.

Also please go through these documents:

"How to confirm that an Exchange mailbox name is unique within the Exchange organization when configuring Backup Exec to back up Exchange "

http://support.veritas.com/docs/256537

How to remove the "Hidden" attribute from Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 mailboxes so that the mailboxes will be available to the Global Address List for backup purposes

http://support.veritas.com/docs/243328

How the "Send As" and "Receive As" permissions affect Backup Exec when backing up Exchange 2000 mailboxes

Hi All.

I thought I would post an update just in case anyone else has this problem in the future.

I knew this issue was strange because the backup jobs were ONLY skipping MS Exchange Calendars and not whole Mailboxes etc. I checked a couple of the points made in a reply above by Symantec but still the problem kept happening.

Anyway, on Friday our MS Exchange Server E-Mail system stopped working for everbody. This was because the Mailbox Store Dismounted automatically, to stop anymore data being written to it, because the database had reached its 16GB limit. Who knew it had a maximum? I thought it would only be limited by Hard Disk space!

Read for reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828070

We solved the space issue and then asked staff to do a little bit of housekeeping of their Mailboxes (and yes I got rid of 3,000 'Deleted Items' too!).

I checked the Backup Log when I got in this morning and would you believe, no errors. All I can think is that our Exchange Server wasn't shutting down the Calendars in peoples Mailboxes properly because the database was running out of space which is why Backup Exec was skipping them saying 'Access Denied' and that they were 'In use'.

Hope this helps somebody else and check your Database sizes!
