  • 1.  Errors eXpress.exe and fault bucket

    Posted Jun 15, 2010 03:26 AM

Have noticed we are getting repeated errors in the event viewer and often get a message when logging into the deployment that express.exe has failed the errors are below any ideas on what may be causing this or a fix.

    We are using DS6.8 sp2.

    Both are application errors.

    Event ID: 1004
Reporting queued error: faulting application eXpress.exe, version 6.8.0.282, faulting module eXpress.exe, version 6.8.0.282, fault address 0x0001a97c.

    Event ID: 1001
    Fault bucket 393668431.

    thanks in advance

On which version of Windows is the server running? Furthermore it is wise to upgrade to the latest version of the Deployment Solution 6.9 SP4
You can find the release notes here

We are on Server 2003 Standard Edition Service Pack 2.

We have not upgraded to DS 6.9SP4 as we have purchased a new server and are in negotiations with contractors to install CMS7.1 and will probably use DS7.1 as part of the changeover.

I have been reluctant to do the upgrade to DS6.9 as when I upgraded from DS6.5 to 6.8 a couple of years ago we encountered some unexpected issues and had to rebuild the DS. As we are in an educational environment we rely heavily on reimaging PC's and as we are still managing on DS6.8 have not taken the risk.

BTW: we have been holding off on the CMS7 install as we were hoping we could install onto Server 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 but I was told last week by our Altiris contact neither would be available until November 2010.

I agree an upgrade is in your best interests at some point. Take a look at some of the DS7.1 discussions here too as you plan your strategy. It has come along way since DS7.0, but it's still not a 1 to 1 replacement for DS6.x, especially for someone who relies heavily on the provisioning environment.

However, back to topic. Check to see if the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is enabled for All Windows Services except those that I specify. I forget which patch, maybe Service Pack 2, set this to the default. I have seen it bring even a brand new DS install to it's knees. Simply set it back to "only essential Windows Services (your only other option)" and reboot.

Would this fix also pertain to the following? I checked DEP and it's set to "All Windows Services except those that I specify"
