I have a Lenovo laptop with Vista Business SP1, Core2 duo T6400, 3GB Ram running WDE Workgroup Edition 10.1.2.9.  I have been using version 9.7 on XP laptops of various makes with no problems for about 2 years.  We are upgrading the PGP software and moving to Windows 7 with some Vista machines.  The newer WDE works great on the Vista laptop except for the etoken.  We use passphrase authentication and I only use the etoken to unlock an encypted laptop. For some reason the etoken is not recognized at all on the Vista laptop with the newer PGP software.  It does not light up and acts as if there were no token plugged in.  As soon as I enter the passphrase and boot into windows, the etoken lights up and can be accessed.  I have rebooted and tried all 4 usb ports on the laptop. I have upgraded the bios and I have tried different etokens with the same result.  The usb ports work fine in windows and the bios is set to allow booting to usb drives.  Does anyone know why an etoken would not be reconized by the PGP boot manger, or could it be the laptop?  I don't have another similar laptop to test, but my older laptops and software work great.

I'm including URLs for several Knowledge Base Articles that might help.  The last one listed is largely because I want to make sure you know which drivers are needed:

    Installing Drivers

    • For Windows Vista users, PGP Desktop 9.7 and above supports version 4.5 of the Aladdin PKI only.
    • PGP Desktop 9.7 is required for version 4.5 of the Aladdin PKI.

Thanks for the quick response.  I have the etoken listed as:Aladdin eToken PRO USB Key 32K, 2048 bit RSA capable .  I have Aladdin PKI 4.55 that we have been using, but I upgraded to PKI 5.0 SP1 when we upgraded the PGP software.  I uninstalled 5.0,reinstalled 4.55, and reinitialized the etoken but it still doesn't recognize it.  It looks like we will have to go back to PGP Desktop 9.7 since it is required for PKI 4.5.  Does the PKI have to be 4.5 or will 4.55 work?  Also, will PGP Desktop 9.7 and PKI 4.5 work for Windows 7 or will we have to upgrade for Windows 7?  Thanks again.

I'm using PGP 10.1.2.26 on 64 bit Windows 7 Ultra, and I'm using eToken driver version 5.0.0.37.  This driver version worked on recent versions as well, but I just don't recall when I started with it.

That Knowledge Base Article looks a little dated (sorry about that!), as the current PGP User's Guide states:

Download the latest version of the eToken PKI Client (RTE) driver software (version 4.5 was the current version when this document was written), then install it on your system. When the installation of the eToken PKI client driver software on your system is complete, open PGP Desktop and click the PGP Keys control box. If the driver software was installed correctly, you see Smart Card Keys listed in the PGP Keys control box.

PGP 9.12 is the first PGP version with Windows 7 support, so 9.7 should not work for you on Win 7.  My memory may not be correct, but I seem to recall that PGP 9.12 had problems with using eTokens for WDE (maybe just for Win 7 - sorry for the vague and possibly incorrect recollection here).

I found the answer to the upgrade question here: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH149595&key=59286

We don't have many Vista machines, and it's not vital that they be encrypted.  Rather than downgrading, I think I will try encrypting a Window 7 laptop (also Lenovo) and see if that works.  Your solution is probably correct, but I don't have the software to test it.  I was mistaken about our older version.  When I checked, I found we have version 9.10 instead of 9.7.  Is PKI 5 is supported in Windows 7 with PGP Desktop 10.1.2. or will I still need 4.5?  If this doesn't work, I'll be inclined to think it's the Lenovo.  These are the first Lenovo laptops I've tried to encrypt and the encryption works fine,  the laptop just doesn't see the etoken at the boot logon screen.

Thanks, I posted before I saw your last post.  I'm marking your first post as the solution and I'll go on to the Windows 7 laptops.  If I had PGP 9.7 I would give it a try just to test it, but I don't have that version.
