EV Backup (SFWHA v5.0, NBU v6.0, Snapshot Backup Policy)

Created: 05 Feb 2008 • Updated: 22 May 2010 | 1 comment

Hello Everyone:

We are in the process of implementing NetBackup Offhost Snapshot backups of our clustered (SFWHA 5.0) EV (v7.0 SP1) environment using the Flashsnap backup method and have a question for anybody who's done the same.

Right now, we are using NBU notify scripts to bring the EV services offline and switch the EV storage services to Read Only mode prior to the backup. A post backup notify script then puts the EV storage services back into RW mode and bring the EV services back online. (Using the Symantec supplied EVOPMODE.bat file).

Okay, so far this works great.

We are planning on using NBU to initiate an offhost flashsnap (VXVM snapshot) (basically, breaking a mirror and exporting the mirror to an NBU media server) backup of the EV index & vault store files.

The only snag that I can see is having the same scripts be called prior to the snapshot creation and after the snap has completed. If we follow the logic of how NBU processes the notify scripts, it will only put the EV services back into RW  after the entire backup has finished.

What we need to do is have a script that  puts the services in RO mode, takes a snap, then puts the services back into RW mode.

Any input or sample scripts that anyone has that have worked successfully with an offhost snapshot backup method would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Daryl Katauskas

Off topic, but I am trying to get the notify scripts to work for EV backups.  Could you provide a litte insight on how you got yours to work?
