Gents

I've found this old Wish List Thread:

https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/message?board.id=106&message.id=1236

I've compilled the most useful requests here.

(Note: I will sort those once I have time, and mark ones that have been implemented and possibly in which version)

Would be great if you post your own "wishes" as a reply to this thread.

I will then add them to this Post.

Cheers

Michel

  • A tool to deal with orphaned vaults, ie. when a mailbox is deleted the vault remains albeit in an orphaned state.
  • AD Resolvable Names in Search
  • How about an Advanced Find that allows you to search on more discrete units of time than just months and years? (i.e. days and weeks)
  • BlackBerry/WindowsMobile Support
  • Auto-Restore of Item when Forwarding Messages
  • Ability not to have your entire vault downloaded if you use offline folders and Archive Explorer (would like to see this as an option)
  • Allow only certain users to delete (goes back to policies being at the OU level)
  • Allow archive from BlackBerry/WindowsMobile
  • Lite EV search tool that can run on a BlackBerry/WindowsMobile
  • Search and Restore to Inbox from BlackBerry/WindowsMobile
  • Auto-Pulldown Body Text on BlackBerry/WindowsMobile if body Text is not in Shortcut
  • Ability for User to Archive PST Directly to EV (no Admin intervention)
  • A supported way to cull the audit database.
  • How about a EVPM reporter...or some way to know the actual in-place settings accurately for each archive and folder...or maybe just report in the client GUI what the settings really are.
  • A few white papers, or sample company docs that take you through design, sizing and mangement for the different features, PST migrations.
  • Some way to throttle restore requests...so a user cannot request a 10GB restore and push it back into their maibox and crash Exchange due to transaction log growth.
  • Prevent user's from adding an archived folder to an Inbox rule. We have users (bless 'em) who copy all their incoming email to a folder that is 100% archived and then delete it when they read it. Does wonders for store fragmentation and audit trails...
  • Index Locations / Vault Stores not tied to Server, for HA & Load Balancing
  • EVPM for everything in VAC
  • Unified search tool - to allow seamless searching of archive & non-archived items [3rd Party] - X1, MS Search and others
  • NFS Import Capability - [PLANNED]
  • How about more overall reporting. What is stored, by user mailbox, in the journal archive? What volume trends? What kind of efficiency are we getting from shared archives (single instance storage) - [PLANNED]
  • Moved Shortcuts Tracking in Archive Explorer - [PLANNED]
  • Some nicer reporting & capacity management tools. - [PLANNED]

  • Eliminate Directory Server as Single Point of Failure - [EV 6] - Multiple Directory Services
  • Deleted Item Retention - [EV 7.5 (2007)] - Deleted Item Recovery
  • Administrative Roles - [EV 7.0] - Roles Based Administration
  • A MOM management pack to help us deal with all the "Event Rich" environment that is EV.  - [EV 6] - MOM Management Pack
  • A method to group archives together to allow different polices to be applied. Not only OU Based. LDAP Query, Group Based etc. - [EV 7] - Provisioning Groups

I would like to add three for EV and DA

The ability to shortcut FSA and have it be retroactive against existng / historical vaults.

The ability to delete scheduled searches in Discovery Accelerator

The ability to be more granular in the permissions in DA (ability to enable or disable scheduled searches)

I would like to be able to reverse a PST that was migrated into a user's mailbox.   IE if a PST gets imported into a mailbox that is not their PST it is difficult at best to back that out.

I would like the journal mailbox to have built in monitoring and a retry on Failed to Store such that if messages were placed in the “Failed to store” folder it would randomly pick one of the messages and retry on an interval once there was a success it would then automatically process all of the messages.

Hi,

In the journal policy you can configure EV to retry failed items.  (can't remember the label off the top of my head)

1.  Add speech to text so that attached voice mails, etc. are converted to HTML and thus full text indexed and searchable

2.  Similarly, add built in OCR so that, say, FAX images arriving as TIF files are OCR'd to HTML and also full text indexed

3.  EV Agent for Desktops; this is still an area requiring a huge amount of manual labor if discovery requires searches of local machines, especially laptops -- essentially FSA for desktops.

4.  PST Import Wizard: add ability to select PST's in subfolders at same time.

5.  Archiving of Contacts and Calendar Items: allow admin to designate whether or not to move the original or move a copy into the archive.  It is currently moving the original and leaves a copy in Exchange with a different SID.  This makes programs like Active Sync think you have deleted the original and added a new unrelated record, which, when sync'd to a phone, blows away any custom attributes the user has set on a phone (e.g. ring tones).

6.  Publish full ERD to facilitate custom reporting

7.  Enhance DA so that it becomes competitive with dedicated tools like Summation and Concordance

8.  Add real time monitoring client, much like Quest's Spotlight and Foglight present for Oracle Databases -- almost a nuclear power plant real time display of how data is moving around in the system, rates, etc.

9.  EV for Voice Mail Systems (e.g. Nortel, Mitel, Avaya, Cisco) where customer for whatever reason is not delivering voice mails as unified messaging

10.  EV for Call Center recording solutions (e.g. Witness)

11.  System Integrity Health Report that looks for inconsistent or broken issues -- mailboxes failing to properly archive, folders that that have lost their EVPM retention properties for whatever reason.

How about that list?

Cheers ... Mark

Sounds great! Some cool ideas, I think.

As a matter of fact, we are just building an OCR System, which converts TIFF to Searchable PDF (which in turn can be archived to EV!)

You may want to contact our peter.kozak (at) vcare-it.com   :)

Have some problems right now, as I'm not be able to edit my Original Post once somebody else replied to it... **bleep** :)

But I'm working on it to have a "nice" Overview list.

Cheers

Michel

* Ability to limit locator task to only process certain volumes instead of entire computers/servers

* Move existing archives between different EV servers such as a move mailbox approach in Exchange

* A way to keep local offline vault data intact when changing or reinstalling branch office computers

And the existing request about enduser ability to import PST's directly to the archive is just right on the money!

I'd like all of the above as they are great requets.

In addition:
•    Replace EVPM with Powershell commands.  EVPM is not the easiest tool to use :-)
•    Change the PST migration Wizard so that it does NOT inherit message classes from the Default PST Migration Policy.  Might be better to ask which messages classes to use this during the wizard or to ask what policy to use.   I got caught out here as the default PST migration policy does not include all message classes.
•    Add the IPM.Schedule* exchange message class as default.
•    Change the way that EVOM monitors journal mailboxes.  Currently the "Archiviable items" parameter includes the items that have not been archives as well as the items in the 5 minute wait period (.pendingarchive.part).  I'd liek to have these two message calsses split up so that you can determine if journaling is broken quicker.
•    Better still would be to not have the 5 minute waite while journaling Exchange 2007.  I found that the servers are underutilized while the messages are moved from IPM.Note to IPM.Note.EnterpriseVault.PendingArchive.Part.  The server is not archiving at this part of the journaling process and it does take quite a while (especially when you are behind).
•    A supported way to destroy individual items from the vault even when journaling.  We had a requirement to do this for stuff like child pornography.
•    A way to do integrated online backups using snap technology.
•    A way to hide the default retention category in DA when doing a search.
•    Parallel searches in DA.  Apparently we can only do serial searches per customer database.
•    DA auditing.  It would be good to have a separate audit mechanism for DA usage.  It is currently possible to do searches in DA that are not recorded.
•    The ability to add computers and PST file to the locator task.  EV has good tools for server side PST migrations, if only we could use them.  They are pretty impractical in a very large organization

@Faxson: Great ideas.

EV8 will start using PowerShell, but replacing EVPM will probably take a while :)

The Backup with Snapshot request will probably be possible with the new Version, too.

As for PST Migration, have a look at our Tool, PST Flightdeck. (www.evtools.net)

Keep adding things!

Hello Michel,

For BlackBerry Symantec is working on a tool that allows you to search your archive from the BB device, and open an archived item. I am not sure when the product is RTM, but the Beta has been completed.

Another couple to add (not sure if someone has already):

* the ability to archive mailboxes hidden in the address book.

* the ability to hide the system and journal mailboxes fro the address book.

And another that I though of after previously posting:

* For the config wizard to NOT require mountV resources when instaling in a VCS cluster.  We user NetApp and hence don't need MountV resources, but have to create dummy ones to get around the wizard.

A simple thing but really really would be useful is the ability to copy policies - ever had to create a new policy when you only want to change one attribute it an absolute pain at the moment

How about adding real time performance monitoring.

1 Stuff like items archived per minute, communication time between EV and storage be it NAS/ SAN or Centera

2 Have the ability to select a task to verify if communication speed between EV and storage is sufficent to meet EV input.

3 System performance tests to be built into EV so you can validate the system performance (do a test write\ read and delete (including to Centera ---test pool on centera)

@Scanner001: I'm currently working on a small project at home doing some EV Statistics/Monitoring via Cacti.

Statistics like Number of Enabled Users, Archiving Rates and things like this.

Hope to get this done next month :)

Michel,

How about adding the ability to create new retention catagory and apply them retroactive so you can then replace an existing catagory to replace an existing one

Here's a minor tweak.  I would like the ability to suppress the Event Log Warning 3361 and Error 2989.  These are the messages when running the Archive Task and it finds mailboxes that aren't in a provisioning group.  A registry edit that would allow you to only show one warning and/or error would be helpful.

Probably me not knowing how to do it, but I'd like much more granularity in the mailbox policy options.

EG - I currently have a policy that archives all items after 6 months, but would like to add a secondary condition that archives all items with attachments over a certain size after only 1 month....

Is there any way of doing this, or is it a valid 'Wish List' item?

Hi Nick,

regarding your policy request:

Why not adding the 'Start with items larger than: 'your size' ' in combination with the 'Never archive items  younger than: 1 month' setting?

This should to the trick, not?

The ability to configure pstlocator to search only a specific share or folder rather than an entire computer's hard disk storage when doing server-driven migrations

The ability to run shortcut deletion more often than once per week!
