This issue has been solved. See solution.

Does anyone know the minimum number of SQL CAL licenses required to support EV9 email archiving to a single Exchange server?

EV9 license excludes Journaling.  Just email archiving.

SQL is 2005 or 2008 Standard.

Enterprise Vault requires its own SQL instance. Also, all customers will have to buy one client license for SQL for EVERY mailbox they wish to archive. IE 500 users require 500 user client SQL licenses .The only way around this is to license SQL by CPU. Either way this will cost end users more

Unless it's a small company/implementation you would want to go with CPU licenses.

The last time I checked the break even was around 200 user CAL's (it was a while ago though).

Here is a link in regard to "Multiplexing" http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2005/en/us/special-considerations.aspx#multiplexing

It's the same for SQL 2008 but there was a better explanation for SQL 2005 :)

Per CPU license is the only way to go. Doing it by User is just too costly unless you are a very small shop
