We have been getting a lot of IIS errors somehow related to MSMSE recently. Each entry points to SMTP218.DLL which is a file located in Symantec\SMSMSE\6.0\Server.

Here are the event log entries:

Faulting application inetinfo.exe, version 6.0.3790.3959, faulting module SMTP218.DLL, version 6.0.5.218, fault address 0x00004f6d.

Source: Application Error, Event ID: 1000

and

Application popup: inetinfo.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x0b2636ea" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

Source: Application Popup, Event ID: 26

When clicking on the view technical information for this error it mentions error signatures for inetinfo.exe version 6.0.3790.3959 and SMTP218.DLL version 6.0.5.218

We have MSMSE version 6.0.5.218 installed. The only page I found related to the error is at http://www.eggheadcafe.com/conversation.aspx?messa... and it does not really help at all. Any solutions or ideas would be appreciated.

Best Solution: Uninstall and Reinstall

Hi Mike

I don't remember seeing one of those errors for a long while--- the last time was back in the SMSMSE 6.0.3 days.  A quick check of case records from that time shows that uninstalling SMSMSE and performing a fresh install generally ensured that all .dll's were current and registered correctly.

Especially if your server is still running 6.0.5, I would recommend giving this a try.  6.0.5 was released in February 2008.  The latest version is 6.0.8, which includes several important enhancements and improvements.  It is also not vulnerable to the Autonomy KeyView Module vulnerability.

As SMSMSE has the ability to export its configuration into a small .xml file, there shouldn't be any need for complex reconfiguration after the clean install.  Just export the settings, uninstall, reinstall, the import.  It will be necessary log out and then log back in, but the Exchange server will not need to be rebooted.  The whole operation should easily take less than 30 minutes.

Final note: keep an eye out for the release of SMSMSE 6.0.9, which is expected to be released later on this month!

Thanks and best regards,

Mick
