This issue has been solved. See solution.

Dear experts,

I need some advise to ensure I am in the right track. Our organization have just upgrade the email system to Exchange 2010 infra. We have total of 3 mailbox servers in the DAG group. 2 in the production site work as active-active. 1 at the DR site and work as passive node for all exch DB.  As there are too many servers needs to be backuped at the production site, exchange backup is taking long time to finish. Yet tapes must be deliver to DR site daily which is making us suffer.

We realise that there is an option in the BE 2010 R3 for exchange that allows us to backup only the passive copy of the DB, with prefered server. We have setup a testing BE media server at the DR site and also tested the option. BE did backup the the exch DB from the passive node at the DR site, which really no incur of much WAN traffic and yet it is fast (no other job running).

We were thinking if we can just backing up the exchange 2010 DB by backing up the passive server at the DR site only? By doing so we can have the following benifits

1. No need to deliver tape offsite to the DR site.

2. Backup job will not affect performance of active server.

3. free up the backup windows for other jobs

4. much faster as no other job at DR site.

However prior to proceed, we wish we are not doing stupid thing or overlook some areas. Hence we wish to consult experts for

1. If it is recomended to utilize backup exec for this?

2. If it good enough to protect our Exch Infra from any disaster?

3. Anything to take note for running this route?

thanks
