Exchange 2007 - V-79-57344-34070 - Snapshot technology error (0xE0008516

Created: 27 Aug 2012 | 3 comments

Greetings,

Been researching for a while now this error message, and I cannot seem to resolve.  Further, if there was a way to get greater detail on this eror message, trouble-shooting might be easier, Error messages are as follows:

Job ended: Monday, August 27, 2012 at 9:14:04 AM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0008516 - Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.
Final error category: System Errors

Backup
V-79-57344-34070 - Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "Microsoft Information Store". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot technology error (0xE0008516): Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed

I have been getting these error messages for a month or longer.

The backup does occur successfully, in that I get about a 90 GB backup (size of the DB's involved) as well as committed logs get flushed.  Further, I did an update this weekend (somewhere on the web talked about applying the latest RollUp update might resolve it) and obviously rebooted the server.  This had been occurring on both of my DB servers, but the second one cleared up after the update/reboot this weekend.

Only other bit of history I have is that we re-structured the DB's and Storage groups to a one-to-one relationship about a month ago when this all started.  Some Storage Groups were deleted, new DB's where created, etc.  I have checked/dobule-checked that only the SG's that I have are selected, have DB's, etc and are all set up correctly.

Finally, I have already gone throough the normal steps, including the following articles.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH72903

The following one does not apply, as there IS a DB in each of the storage groups it is complaining of.

My next choice I will try is going to be blow away the job completely and re-create the job, although I would rather see if there is a fix first.

Thanks,

James

...is AOFO turned on in the job itself? If so, turn it off & try the backup again.

Thanks!

Hello James,

I went through your problem closely and to an extent agree with the suggestion to re-create the backup job.

As you have mentioned that databases were re-structured and re-mapped, however  as a matter of fact the backup exec selection list do not update dynamically, causing the issue.

So re-creating the Backup Job(new selection list.) sound feasible in this circumstances.
