Exchange backup not deleting logs and agent install keeps appearing

Created: 18 Oct 2013 | 5 comments

I have two issues. The server runs Server 2008 R2, Backup Exec 2010 R3. The client server runs Server 2012 Datacenter and Exchange 2013. Both are Hyper-V guests. The Exchange server is new and just replaced an Exchange 2010 server on 2008.

1. Backups are not deleting the transaction logs on the Exchange server. What do I need to look at and how to fix?

2. Every time the Exchange server is rebooted, it says "installing Backup agent" or something like that. According to the BE server, the agent is installed just fine. Why does the Exchange server keeping thinking it needs to install the agent?

Hi Jonathan,

It might be that something interferred with the agent installation on the Exchange server.

Make sure the Backup Exec server is fully patched with Live Updates

Uninstall the Remote agent on the Exchange Server

then push the agent to the Exchange server (re install)

Thanks Imosla, I'll do just that and let you know if it works or not.

Imosla,

I ran Live Update on the BE server and there was only one update, Service Pack 3, which I installed.

I uninstalled the Remote Agent from the Exchange server via Programs and Features. Do I have to reboot the Exchange server before reinstalling the Remote Agent?

If you are backing up the Exchange server as a VM, then the transaction log is not deleted.  You would need to do an Exchange backup to delete the logs.

Well I found my answer in another thread. BE 2010 does not support Exchange 2013. Only BE 2012 does and even that doesn't support GRT backups, just non-GRT. So it looks like I need to get busy and upgrade to BE 2012.
