Exchange to disk w/enable restore of individual messages does not work

I've setup the Exchange backup exactly as documented by Symantec, but it is not working.
I create a job to backup the Information Store. I select Full backup and choose the "Enable restore of individual mail messages..." option.
I send this job to a Backup to Disk folder located on an NTFS volume of the Backup Exec media server, with plenty of free disk space. (It is a spanned volume, 2 73GB drives)
I have unchecked the option on the folder for "Allocate the maximum size for backup-to-disk files"
I am using the domain administrator account and this account has access to everything
This same exact job WILL run to tape
This same exact job WILL run to disk with the "Enable restore of individual mail messages..." option UNCHECKED
BUT, it fails immediately with this error if I try to do it the correct way...

e00084f9 - A communications failure has occurred between the Backup Exec job engine and the remote agent.

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-34041

I've tried every combination of every option I can think of... I tried using policies, I tried reinstalling the agents, I recreated the Backup-to-Disk folders and partitions. I tried using the continuous protection option...etc. etc. etc.  The error doesn't seem to make any sense considering the circumstances...
I could really use some help on this because I'm stumped and really need to get this thing going.

Thanks!

CLARIFICATION! I know the error points to remote connectivity, but I have already ruled this out...The job DOES work under several other circumstances as described above and I am getting good backups using the legacy methods to tape.

Thanks

Hi Jerry,

Can you please clarify; what version of Exchange, and is it on the same server as Backup Exec or a remote server? If remote, let me know what O/S and service pack level is running there.

Thanks,
Greg

Exchange 2000 Build 6249.4, Service Pack 3 on Windows 2000, Service Pack 4
Backup server is remote, Windows Server 2003 Standard, Service Pack 1

Thanks,
Jerry

OK, I just upgraded to build 7170 and the issue still remains. Doesn't anyone have any ideas what could be going on here?

Seeing exactly the same here, 7170 Media Server is W2003 SS2003 SP2, Exchange 2000 SP3 on W2000 SP4.

All jobs to tape are fine.  Both servers are dual-homed and all jobs specify subnet to use.

UPDATE:

My test job is for Exchange Public Folders only.

Change job to 'use any available network interface' instead of specified and it runs fine.

This makes no sense at all. Other jobs can include Exchange PFs and do not fail. My servers are all dual-homed with a private 1gbit (192.168.0) subnet used only for backup and replication. All the other jobs specify the 1gbit network and work. I'm getting nearly 2gb/min to tape on the Gbit network but sub-400mb/min on the public 100.

How in the world did you ever figure that out? I too am running the same backbone structure for backup. I changed it to any available adapter and sure enough, that worked! I was experiencing the same problem on our brand new W2k3 Ex2007 server. I prefer to run backups on the backbone, but now that our LAN is fully gigabit it shouldn't be a problem but I'd prefer to run this traffic behind the scenes.

Symantec: any chance this can be fixed?!
