I have installed 11d 32 bit version on SBS 2000 and server 2003 with Exchange 2003. One only list 4 mailbox's for granular restore the other 8 out of 24. If I restore the whole private store it has backed up the full store.

I can not find any common thread in terms of permissions on the mailbox's that are available / are not available.

All have mail. It is not a size thing either as some have larger and somehave smaller mailboxes.

Any idea's?Message was edited by:

Do all your mailboxes have mail, or just the ones that you can see?

We are running Backup Exec 11d (with HOTFIX2) on a Windows 2003 / Exchange 2003 box (standard) and are having the same problem. While the backup ran successfully last night, when you go to restore specific mailboxes, some are simply not listed. I have counted 6 so far of the 180+ (including mine which is a domain admin mbox). After comparing permissions on the accounts that are not available to be restored and those that are available to be restored I can not find any differences. In addition, I can not find any similarities between the accounts that I can not restore (e.g. some people are faculty, some are staff, last names range from F to W, mailbox sizes range from very little to very large, etc.)

In addition, while we have several public folders, when we attempt to restore public folders there are none listed (even though Symantec has finished the backup).

Also, we are setup to backup M-F @ 11pm (so tonights backup should be listed as 11/17), however it is listed as 11/21 (even after assuring all settings). It seems as though the scheduling time/date function is off.

Please keep in mind during the upgrade to 11D we followed the following steps and may need to reboot our server (however we were never prompted to):
1. Removed Symantec Backup Exec 10d (trial) - NOT PROMPTED TO REBOOT
2. Installed Symantec Backup Exec 11d (trial) - NOT PROMPTED TO REBOOT
3. Ran LiveUpdate and Installed HOTFIX2 - NOT PROMPTED TO REBOOT
4. There is an alert message in the Symantec program that suggests rebooting but we have not had a window of opportunity to do so yet.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have the same issue on a Microsoft Windows 2003 SP1 platform with Exchange 2003 SP2 and BEX 11d. Only a few mailboxes are listes for granular recovery.

I have realized that the mailboxes I can see in the granular recovery are only those where several users have access to at the same time (shared mailboxes) (extra rights given in the mailboxes for these users) and can send on behalf of.

How can I manage to see all my mailboxes?

When I backup the Storage group, the size of the backup corresponds to the size of the priv1.edb. With this visibility, will I be able to restore my entier priv1.edb in case of a crash?

Thank you for your help.

Are these backups to tape or disk?

Not sure if this is applicable in your case but I found with BE10 the only account that could backup and restore all mailboxes (brick level with BE10) was the first domain administrator account "Administrator".

Using any other administrator account I could backup the store but not individual mailboxes. All the rights in Exchange looked the same for all administrator accounts.
I never did get round to finding which rights to which part of Exchange needed changing to enable it to work with any other account than "Administrator"

Hi,

Event though I run BEX with a service account, I did try to backup the mailboxes using the Administrator's account but I still get the same results.

Can you guys take a look at your restore selection and determine a mailbox that is missing. Then run a traditional mailbox brick level backup by selecting it under the mailbox icon and not the information stoare icons and uncheck the option in the job setup to not to use a granular restore. I wonder if the problem is the mailbox backup is actually failing internally during the granualar backup process thus its not showing it to restore. Hope that make since..

Thank you for the reply. I have checked and I cannot do a backup with the traditional brick level backup. In fact, under my Exchnage server in the backup selection list, I only see Microsoft Information Store and not the Mailbox icon at the same level.

I would suspect a rights issue or an issue with the mailbox itself. Unlike IS database backups that only require local admin rights on the Exchange server, creating the granular restore selections requires Exchange rights just like the legacy mailbox backup methods. The account being used should be delegated control within Exchange System Manager at the top (domain) level. As previously mentioned, a good method for testing rights is to do a brick level type backup as a test. Any problem you'd see with the brick level backup translates directly to problems you'd expect to see with creating granular selections.

From what I understand, the "granular recovery" missing mailboxes issue will only occur if the backup was to tape and the user performing that backup does not have rights to the mailboxes.

Either:

1. Make sure the user connecting to Exchange has rights to the mailboxes being backup up (much like it was in Backup Exec 10),

OR

2. Backup to disk

I must be doing something wrong but I have delegated control to the backup account within Exchange System Manager at the top (domain) level, restarted the Exchange Services and the Backup Exec services and I still cannot see the mailbox brick layer. In addition, I have connected myself to the Exchange server via Backup Exec console with the Administrator's account (in the backup wizard as well, connection with the account Administrator on the Exchange server) and still cannot see the mailbox layer.

I used to see this mailbox layer in the version 10.1 but cannot see it anymore in version 11.0. Has something changed?

Are you referring to the ability to see mailboxes in backup selections? 11d is different in this manner. By default, mailboxes no longer show up in backup selections. You restore mailboxes from the database backup. If you wish to see mailboxes for backup test, you go to Tools | Options | Microsoft Exchange | 'Enable legacy mailbox support...'

I just added the SELF pemission to mailboxes which weren't being backed up, sadly this will take about 45mins to test, but I'm pretty confident this is the solution.

I just compared the permissions with the 10 or so successful mailboxes, and this appears to be the difference.

I can back up the mailboxes using the legacy method. On the same job I backup the information store. I can restore from the legacy method but the same mailbox does not appear in the list from information store.

Thank you. Indeed, I can see them now with this option. Unfortunately, I still cannot see all of my mailboxes from the database backup when I want to restore...

Has anyone figured this out yet? I tried setting the permissions for "SELF" but it still doesn't list all of the mailboxes as available for restore. I can't see any difference in permissions at all. Wierd...

Hi All,

It would seem I may have a similar issue. I have performed a full backup on the information store, and yet when I looked at the selections available to restore, only 5 of my 12 user mailboxes are listed.

I have looked in the Tools|Options|Microsoft Exchange area and have the option to 'Enable the restore of individual mail messages and folders from Information Store Backups'. I have not selected the Legacy Support as it says not recommended - use Information Store instead.

I cannot see any difference between the user mail boxes as all users in active directory specify to store in the info store.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
