Hello folks.
I have been doing some tests of backup and restores of exchange 2007 data with Backupexec 11 and have run into a problem i cant seem to solve myself.

I want to restore a full and an incremental backup. I have tried to restore it back to the storage group it came from, which worked fine. Then I wanted to restore it to a RSG. If i restore the full backup, including the logfiles in it, everything turns out fine, when i remember to create the '_restoredLogs' folder under the storage group. Then, when I try to add the incremental to the restore, it fails.

The error message i get is something like:
000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online, and then try again.

I should mention, that i have tried to restore both (full and incremental) in one restore job, and in seperate jobs. In both cases, it seems it fails when it reaches the incremental part of the restore.

Have anyone tried this, and maybe have a few words of advice on what to try?

... oh, and whats with the excessive amount of writer errors? Cant count how many times I had to restart the VSS service.

Noone tried this and failed?... or someone tried and succeeded? Would like to hear of any experience with it.

Casper,

What are the writer errors you are seeing during the restore?

Just as a note, with Exchange 2007 we have to use VSS to backup and restore the data as per Microsoft standards for Exchange 2007 backups.

If this response answers your concern, please mark it as a "solution"

Hi Ben,
thanks for replying.
I think we established that the writer errors occur when we re-try a failed restore, where the previous restore has left some temporary files in the SG folder.

The writer error we get is:
Error category    : Resource Errors
Error             : e000fed1 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status.

Removing the temporary files and restarting the vss service has always been enough to fix the problem.

Hi Casper,

it seems I have the same problem as you. Restore attempt of incremental logs to RSG fails with error "e000fed1 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status".
If I run "vssadmin list writers" on the exchange server after failed restore I get:

Writer name 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
State: [14] Failed
Last error: Retryable Error.

I can't made it to work corectly :(. Restarting VSS service and Exchange Information Store doesn't help. Can you give me some more detailed information what you did to workaround this problem? Where can I find temporary files of VSS?
