Exchange Server Backups Failing

Created: 27 Mar 2013 | 5 comments

Hi,

We have recently upgraded to Backup Exec 2012 and I have gotten it to work well for the most part, but have been having some issues with backing up our Exchange server.  It seems like it is backing up the data, but we keep getting this error:

Backup 00474-Differential -- The job failed with the following error: A failure occurred querying the Writer status.

I'm not quite sure what to do about it.  I've tried rebooting the server, but that did not help.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

What is the version of Exchange ? When vssadmin list writers is run from the cmd of the exchange server, are any writers in a non-stable state ? If yes, do restarting the information store service or rebooting the server brings them back to stable state ?

Lastly, do ensure AOFO is not enabled in the backup job properties.

Thanks for the reply.  We are running Exchange 2010.  I did the "vssadmin list writers" command just now and it did show that some of the writers were in a "failed" state.  The server was rebooted last night so it looks like that didn't help.

When I just checked in the Advanced Open File Options, the Use Snapshot Technology option IS checked.  Should I uncheck that?

Thanks!

Yep, Uncheck it. Typically AOFO is not to be enabled for dB backups.

Hi, which writers were in a failed state. What versions of Windows are you running for the Exchange and Backup Exec Server?

Check out this link for a solution.

Hi,

Looks like unchecking the option for AOFO helped the backups pick up all of the data.  So that is a good thing!  Still getting that writer error though.  We are running Exchange and Backup Exec on Server 2008 R2.  Here's the writers that are in a failed state:

ASR Writer

System Writer

Shadow Copy Optimization Writer

Registry Writer

Com+ RegDB Writer

Certificate Authority

IIS Config Writer

WMI Writer

IIS Metabase Writer

Thanks!
