Experiencing very slow Package Capture Process using SV Composer with large apps

Created: 13 Apr 2014 • Updated: 13 Apr 2014 | 1 comment

We have a lot of large applications that over 1GB in size with 10,000+ files.

On its own an application may take 10-15 minutes to install.

I’m finding when using Symantec Virtual Composer (7.5) for the package capture process, the large applications I am installing take hours to install and thus the capture process takes ages. This happens with both single & global package capturing with both using VMWare and a physical machine.

This slowness can’t be by design as it is ridiculous. Is anyone else experiencing this behaviour during a capture? Is there a way to speed up Symantec Virtual Composer capturing process?

Just to be clear i am talking about during the capture process, not deploying or activating of a virtual application.

I suspect it is just a reflection of the way that the capture process works. It may be interesting to examine task manager and check whether it is the I/O channel that is getting the biggest workout. If I recall correctly the capture process is based on API activity rather than a "snapshot" approach, so files are being processed one by one.  Do you have a spare SSD device you could use as a hard disk and see if this speeds things up for you?
