This issue has been solved. See solution.

two computers (windows xp sp3) having SEPSBS 12.0 clients installed showed some weird symptoms.  After logging to those particular computers, explorer screen won't show up. from the task manager explorer.exe won't be there in the process list.  the only solution is to manually launch explorer.exe from the task manager

Please note this only happened after installing the SEP clients

Check this KB first -

The Windows Explorer Shell (explorer.exe) fails to load at logon when Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) is installed

What AV product was installed before SEP12 SBE? Did you make sure the systems were clear of infections before installing the client?

If the KB article above fails to resolve the issue,

you might try running the SEP support tool and see if anything out of the ordinary comes up.

Make sure to run the Load Point tool - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

Both had AVG 2011 free edition installed.  I cannot confirm wither they were 100% clean, but according to the installed antivirus then it was clean

I'm currently evaluating the product and hence no support agreement with symantec

I would try running the free Virus Detection utility from Symantec to verify those two systems are in fact clean.
