This issue has been solved. See solution.

Backing up my Windows 2000 domain controllers presents me with the following error:

Final error: 0xe00084f9 - A communications failure has occurred between the Backup Exec job engine and the remote agent.

The BE server backs up the C: and D: drives just fine, but as soon as it's about to start with System State, it fails with the above error. Here's the full story:

- The BE server is fully patched and updated
- The Remote Agents on both domain controllers are freshly installed
- There are no network issues on the domain controllers nor on the BE server
- Other backup jobs on the same BE server run just fine (after two months of dealing with errors and browsing this forum)
- Backup jobs using BE 9.1 on the same domain controllers went smoothly
- I've already recreated the jobs, went through every option available and re-installed the remote agents twice
- Local backups using NTbackup work just fine

Any ideas?

Marvellous. This post has

Marvellous.

This post has been here for two days straight now. You would have thought somebody from Symantec would come up with a half decent pointer in the right direction...
