Failed RU5 upgrade

Charlatat's picture

Attempted to upgrade our MR4MP2 server to RU5.  The process failed (don't have an exact error msg).  Figured I would do a Repair on its installation. It failed since I didn't have the original installation media (removed them once I had gotten RU5 downloaded). Since then, clients won't receive def updates. They have a green dot, so they're successfully connected to the server but no updates.  Now, I can't find the older version to redownload and/or can't upgrade the current installation.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks much

Hi,

You can reboot the server. Once reboot it done, try running management server configuration wizard from start->all programs->symantec endpoint protection manager

If that does not help, please post the contents of scm-server-0.log and upgrade.log from c:\prog files\symantec\sepm\tomcat\logs

1. Rebooted the server
2. Ran the Management Server Configuration Wizard

Getting to a point where it's asking for the DBA password to the embedded database.  Everything I put in, says it Failed to connect to the database.  Is there a default embedded password?

I didn't manually stop the managment console service prior to the upgrade, since I had a different machine that upgraded flawlessly and didn't see a need.

Hi, A couple of things to

Hi,

A couple of things to check. Make sure that the symantec embedded database service has started.
Check the ODBC connection:

To enter the login credentials:

  1. In the Windows Control Panel, open Data Sources (ODBC).
  2. On the System DSN tab click Symantec Endpoint Security DSN.
  3. Click Configure.
  4. On the Login tab, enter the User ID DBA and the Symantec Endpoint Protection database password configured during installation (this is the same as the Endpoint Protection Manager login password by default).
  5. On the Database tab enter ComputerName that runs Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager into the "Server name:" field.
  6. Under Database Name, enter the following: sem5
  7. On the Network tab ensure TCP/IP is checked.
  8. Enter the IP address of the computer that runs Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager into the TCP/IP field in the following format:
    HOST=10.10.10.10
  9. On the ODBC tab, click Test.
  10. If the test is successful Click OK to save the changes. If the test is not successful please refer to the document "Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 11.x communication troubleshooting" or contact Symantec technical support for assistance.

Yes, the embedded database

Yes, the embedded database service has started.  I went through the ODBC settings, matching what was suggested above.  I fail the Test Connection part, says Invalid user ID or password.  Is there a way to reset the password?

Was able to complete the

Was able to complete the Management Configuration Wizard successfully, following a different link than the one posted above.  However, that didn't really change anything.  Clients still don't get definition updates nor can I upgrade to RU5 because it says there's already an installation taking place. I assume its due to the "Repair" option I tried previously. Where can I get media for MR4MP2, so I can complete the repair process and try the upgrade to RU5 again?

Yes there is a need for stopping SEPM service. There's been many posters saying that upgrade wasn't successful, and reason for that in too many cases is that SEPM service wasn't stopped.
And WARNING! text in upgrade guide isn't there just for fun.

My opinion is that Symantec should add automatic service stopping for upgrade process, or restrict downloads so that new version can be downloaded only after saying 100 times to Symantec's support that "yes i'll remember to stop SEPM service before starting to upgrade management server".

Charlatar, you have my apologies, i didn't mean to be rude.

I'm quite sure you can get older version of SEP installation media from Symantec, just need to call them and ask for that. Or if you have a valid support, you can open case from Symantec's Mysupport, https://mysupport.symantec.com/
