  • 1.  Failure to manually update Sonar and IPS

    Using Endpoint Protection version 12.1.671.4971 as a stand alone PC in this case as a Client without internet access I'm not able to manually update the Sonar and the IPS but able to update the File Based Protection.  All are able to be updated with the Live Update.  I get the "update failed message".

    I tried the "Download .jdb files to update definitions for managed Endpoint Protection clients" http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH104363 and didn't resolve issue.  Any help would be great.

    Are you running it on SEP client directly or at SEPM?

    For SEP 12.1 RU3 and later, .jdb and .exe standalone updaters are available for SONAR ("Behavior-Based Protection") and IPS ("Network-Based Protection") definitions. These are now available from Security Response's Virus Definitions & Security Updates page.

    12.1.671.4971 is very old version & you should plan to upgrade to the latest version SEP 12.1 RU5 (12.1.5337.5000)

    I believe you could only update SONAR and IPS with the JDB starting with 12.1.3.

    I believe I'm running it directly as the SEPM doesn't ring a bell.

    The link from above Virus Definitions & Security Updates is the same location that I download my updates.

    My method of updating:

       Download from the link above

       Copy/paste on other machine

       Run file and watch it update.

    What do I need to do to update to latest version?

    Problem is you're running an old version that doesn't support this method for updating IPS and SONAR.

    Tp upgrade to 12.1.5, go to https://symantec.flexnetoperations.com and enter in your serial number.

    Upgrade or migrate to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.5

    I must have the exception to this because I have five other machines that I update this very way as this is a clone of those other machines.

    If I understand correctly the number for my version is 12.1.671-4971 which is older than 12.1.5?  I'm not sure I understand the revision numbering.

    The version you have is the very first version of SEP 12.1. For this version, the Intelligent Updater will only update the AV definitions. To update the others, you need to launch LiveUpdate on client itself and let it go out to Symantec LiveUpdate to get updates.

    Upgrading to 12.1.5 (latest version) is the quickest way around this so you can use Intelligent Updater to update all components.
