Hi!

We are getting "A failure occurred querying the Writer status" while trying to backup Exchange 2003 SP2 on Windows 2003 SP2. After running the backup and typing "vssadmin list writers" is returning

"Last error: Retryable error" in Exchange.

Tried to remove the license and re-enabling it but same problem.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks.

Quick Look Solution

Hi!

The problem was with the Backup Exec. I repaired the Backup Exec installation and restarted the server. Now it is working fine.

This could be due the failed upgradation of Backup Exec 2010 to 2012 which was attempted a few days ago.

Thanks.

It mostly seems to be a Exchange Writer issue and not the issue with Backup Exec. Check if any Vss related patch need to for the operating syatem .

You may need to reboot the

You may need to reboot the server to stabalize the failing writer. also when youre backup up the exchange database be sure to disable AOFO under settings and Advaned open file in the  job properties.

It is strange , because if

It is strange , because if the writer status is retryable , untill the exchange server is rebooted ,the backup will not run successful. I wonder how running the a repair install would fix this issue .

Before repairing Backup Exec

Before repairing Backup Exec i installed WindowsServer2003-KB940349-v3-x86-ENU on Exchange, restarted the server and checked the wirter status again, it shows no errors but the writer status again changed to retryable right after running the backup. Then i went for BE repair.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info. But I

Thanks for the info. But I beleive you have to reboot your exchange server  after installing the patch and because if you do not reboot the backup job would fail again.

...I think that the OP already stated clearly he'd restarted the server before running the backup again and checking that the VSS writers had failed. He then went for the repair which worked...wink
