fatal error during installation- can't uninstall
Updated: 29 Oct 2010 | 8 comments
trying to get a machine ready for ghost and have to remove sav 10.1.6000 and can't uninstall.
it goes thru the motions but at the very end it says that it was interuppted and can't complete the uninstall. after clicking finish a small window pops up and says fatal error during installation.
corporate included this version on the base image but, we have moved to a newer version and need to prepare our next image.
we are a managed site and this version will not marry up with the new server.
thanks-

Hi dhchapman,
I would see two options:
1. Try to upgrade to whatever new version you have and see if the upgrade goes fine
2. Remove the antivirus manually using the manual uninstall steps in the Knowledge Base
I would definitely go for #1 :-)
Oh, and make sure you have a look at this one: Configuring Symantec AntiVirus for deployment as part of a drive image, otherwise you will get duplicate clients in your console.
Easy Uninstall Solution....
I found on all my clients that the above steps are not required.
Go to Computer Management> Services. Find ALL of your Symantec services. There should be four or five of them. Right Click> Go To Properties> And disable each service at startup. Reboot the computer and try the uninstall again from the Add/Remove Programs. You should not have any issues.
Try to install the SAV client
Try to install the SAV client over the existing one and then try to uninstall. The manual uninstall steps would be the next option if you dont want to use the removal tools. Also, are there any event logs?
fatal error during installation- can't uninstall
Downaod Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
and then try to remove SAV, and see if that works or not.

Uninstall old SEP client using cleanwipe utility.
Uninstall Windows Installer.
Delete Folders from C:\Program Files\Symantec
Delete Folders from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
Delete Folders from C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
Try to install Unmanaged SEP & replace the Sylink with the Managed.
This works.

It is not recomended to run
It is not recomended to run the Cleanwipe on the Server, but if there is no alternative you can run it, but make sure that you have the NIC drivers handy in case the server loose its connectvity.
