Hi All,

I hope someone can help.

We have a customer trying to run our installation, which sets up/configures a web site.  They are attempting to run in on 64 bit Windows Server 2008.  They get a fatal error with no real error number or good description so I walked them through logging the install.  A snippet of the log with 'fatal' references is displayed below and the full log is attached and I can't really determine the problem.

If anyone could take a look at the log and let me know what they think I would greatly appreciate it.

Hope to hear from someone soon!

Have you tried duplicating

Have you tried duplicating the error yourself - perhaps with an eval copy of W2K8 if you don't have a copy already?
Attaching the full log as a TXT file loses all the formatting and makes it all but unuseable, so if you could replace the TXT with a .ZIP version that would allow us to review the full log.

Incidentally, what systems and which versions of IIS have you tested your application on?

Not sure how extensive

Not sure how extensive testing was on OS mentioned (just back from layoff), but I think they are OK on earlier OSs.  IIS 7 I believe.  I'm trying to set up a test area now to see if I can duplicate the error.

I can't find a link to repost the file .zipped ?

Do you have an EDIT button

Do you have an EDIT button showing on your original posting ?  If so, you can edit the original posting and replace the .TXT file with the .ZIP

OK, Ill try that, but here is

OK, Ill try that, but here is an area of the log that might be of concern...  It looks like there is a problem creating site or virtual directories. ???

I'll try the edit button.

Its IIS 7 if I haven't

Its IIS 7 if I haven't mentioned before and we're checking into the possiblity of it being caused by the lack of the IIS 6 compatiblity pack.

Enabling the compatibility

Enabling the compatibility pack for IIS 6, we are OK so that was the problem.

Now I have to tweak my install package to detect the IIS 6 compatibility pack and the state of ASP extensions.

I having the same problem

I am having the same problem however I am getting a 1603 error message for the WiseVirtDirCall action. Would I need to apply the same resolution to correct this issue? Here is a snippet of my log file:

WiseWeb: Removing virtual directory - Site: Default Web Site - Virtual Directory: Test123
WiseWeb: Creating virtual directory/web directory (debug_code)
WiseWeb: Failed to create/update virtual directory correctly
WiseWeb: Removing virtual directory - Site: Default Web Site - Virtual Directory: MASCO
WiseWeb: All virtual directory/web directory creation complete
WiseWeb: Memory clean-up complete
WiseWeb: CreateWebSitesAndVDirs action ending
CustomAction WiseVirtDirCallDll returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
MSI (s) (44:38) [00:03:50:105]: User policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
MSI (s) (44:38) [00:03:50:105]: Machine policy value 'DisableRollback' is 0
Action ended 0:03:50: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.
MSI (s) (44:38) [00:03:50:143]: Executing op: Header(Signature=1397708873,Version=500,Timestamp=1016856658,LangId=1033,Platform=0,ScriptType=2,ScriptMajorVersion=21,ScriptMinorVersion=4,ScriptAttributes=1)
MSI (s) (44:38) [00:03:50:143]: Executing op: DialogInfo(Type=0,Argument=1033)

Thank you!

There is nothing in the

There is nothing in the snippet of logfile you posted to indicate the cause of your error, but it is clear that InstallFinalize failed, so some action in the Execute sequence did not work.
Look for other "Return Value 3"  entries.
Recommend you also try the solution described here - it will either work or fail, and that will provide additional input.

There is only one more Return

There is only one more Return Value 3 entry and it is at the bottom of the log file:
MSI (s) (44:38) [00:05:59:515]: PROPERTY CHANGE: Deleting UpdateStarted property. Its current value is '1'.
Action ended 0:05:59: INSTALL. Return value 3.

It seems as though the WiseVirtDirCall action is what is causing the problem however I am not able to determine why.

I have tried the implementing the resolution here but still receiving the same results.
