Hi,

How to use fibre as heartbeat channel ? Did anyone try before ?

Thank you.

VCS can not use FC as heartbeat.
We can use disk heartbeat(GABDISK) as substitute, but GABDISK can not carry cluster state. In addition, it is unable to configure HB with GABDISK only.
For details, check VCS user's guide. I recommend you not to use GABDISk.

Hi Yasuhisa,

Thank you for your reply.

I would like to use FC for heartbeat is because I need a long distance heartbeat (more than 500m). Therefore is it network cable (CAT5 or CAT6) can support more than 500m of distance without weaken the signal ?

Is FC-IP (FC over IP) can be configured for VCS heartbeat ?

I would think that FC-IP can't be used for heartbeat. Heartbeat uses LLTP (Low Latency Transport Protocol), rather than IP.

Hi Hywel,

Is that anyway to use fibre connection for heartbeat, if distance of the 2 cluster servers is far ?

Thanks.

Hmm, I have already written somewhere in this board.
It may be possible with 1000Base-LX single mode fibre(SMF). Max distance is 10km.
But I can not find any native HBA of SMF, so media converter(e.g. 1000Base-T to 1000Base-LX SMF) is needed.

I found useful document about cluster communication. Refer followins, too.

Thank you for everyone help and info given.

Fibre (FC) cannot be configured as heartbeat channel for VCS. Fibre optic cable can be a medium for long distance heartbeat transmission instead of UTP (CAT5/CAT6) cable.

We do not support heartbeat over FC.
WAY too many variables for reliable support.
You can run Gigabit over single mode fiber out to sometjing like 80km

How about using the Global Cluster Manager?

Create two individual clusters on either site and link them with GCO using a low priority ICMP heartbeat link?

Just an idea?
